Hospital board approves new ambulance purchase

One of the big items of business for the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) Board of Trustees on Monday, was approving the purchase of a new ambulance for the hospital. HCMH Ambulance Director Mike Sexe reported that the hospital has seen an increase in the number of calls and the amount of activity during the past year. “We’ve responded to 90 more calls this year than last year, and have logged 4,000 more miles. The number of long-distance transfers we have done is up significantly,” Sexe told the board. The hospital received three quotes for ambulance units, from Horton for $149,113, Life Line for $136,298, and Wheeled Coach for $133,527. Sexe said the Life Line unit is heavier and more durable. The ambulance director recommended the purchase of the Life Line ambulance along with the Stryker brand cot for $11,705.52, and the LifePak monitor for $18,049.65.

Hadar's council seat open for November ballot

While several smaller communities in Humboldt County have contested races for a number of city offices, Humboldt has less than the required amount to fill the chairs around the conference table in the City Hall chambers. As of the filing deadline which was last Thursday, Sept. 19, at 5 p.m., the city had one candidate for council member at-large, one candidate for the Ward 1 seat recently vacated by the resignation of Steve Boomgarden, and one candidate for mayor. Sitting council member Joe Hadar decided not to file for re-election to the council. Longtime councilman Darrell Rusher did file nomination papers. Dan Scholl, who lives on 4th Avenue SW, decided to file for the Ward 1 seat, to represent the city’s south side. Boomgarden resigned early last month after faced with a choice of retaining his full-time council position or remaining on as the city’s part-time building and zoning administrator. Walter Jensen has decided to run for a fourth term as Humboldt’s mayor.

COOK OF THE WEEK - CROCKPOT RECIPES

Fall is officially here. With the cooler weather (well maybe) and hectic schedules, it’s still nice, more cost efficient and many times healthier to sit down to a home-cooked meal. One of the best ways to accomplish this is with a slow cooker, for example a crockpot. This week’s cook column revisited some of the cooks from the past three-plus years and their slow-cooker recipes.Slow Roasted Beef (Crockpot)Jolene Pisel1 sirloin tip roast1 can beef broth1 package of French’s au jus mix1 package of Zesty Italian seasoning mix Thaw roast completely. Place thawed roast in crockpot. Combine beef broth and au jus mix; pour over roast then sprinkle with dry Italian dressing mix; covering meat. Cook on low for 6-8 hours depending on the roast size. (Cooking longer doesn’t seem to hurt anything if your day doesn’t go as planned!) This not only makes a great roast, but also shredded roast beef sandwiches. Leftover roast makes great beef and noodles and vegetable beef soup.
