Changes to Humboldt County Fair Queen contest

With two recent Humboldt County Fair Queens running the 2014 Humboldt County Fair Queen Contest one might expect some changes. Former Humboldt County Fair Queens Jackie Bleich (2010) and Molly Terwilliger (2011) are helping reshape the Humboldt County Fair Queen Contest. Both are members of the Humboldt Business and Professional Women (BPW), which has run the Fair Queen Contest for many decades. The Fair Queen Contest is sponsored by the Humboldt County Fair Board. One big thing that is new this year is the Humboldt County Fair Queen will receive a total of $1,000 in scholarship funds and the runnerup will receive a $250 scholarship. The contest is open to young women ages 16-21. Any young women who does the majority of her activities in Humboldt County is eligible. The deadline for entering the contests is noon on Wednesday, June 11. Terwillger and Bleich have created a Facebook page where girls can ask questions and access an entry form.

City's DNR fine reduced

The city of Humboldt could use a bit of good news and received it from an unlikely source Monday, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). In a letter dated May 1, the DNR agreed to revise its administrative consent order issued April 4, which levied a $10,000 fine on the city for Humboldt’s failure to meet surface water treatment rule requirements. Under the revision, the city agrees to have the nearly $7 million upgrade of the city’s municipal water treatment plant completed by June 1. The city would also agree to pay a $2,000 administrative penalty. In lieu of the penalty, the city could pay the $2,000 to a Supplemental Environmental Project to the Humboldt County Conservation Board. In light of the recent transfer of trumpeter swans raised in Humboldt to other Iowa locations, Humboldt City Administrator Aaron Burnett suggested the $2,000 be used for development of trumpeter swan nesting habitat here in Humboldt County.
