Before school conferences prepare students and parents

The days of the frantic, open house nights before the first day of school for elementary students is a thing of the past for the Humboldt Community School District, but that’s a good thing. When school began last week for elementary students, there were no surprises and anxiety was reduced to a minimum. After experimenting last year with a new concept of conducting conferences prior to the start of school involving, parents, kindergarten students and teachers, school officials expanded the format in 2014 for all elementary grade levels and all agree it is an overwhelming success. “I cannot say enough good things about these conferences. Both as a parent and as a school employee, I have seen so many benefits for the children, parents and teachers,” Mindy Skow, a parent who is also employed as an associate in the district, said. COOK OF THE WEEK - LABOR DAY RECIPES

Many people celebrate Labor Day by going on a short vacation or at least driving out of town to a park or a lake. Because many people take this weekend to take a final summer trip, highways and airports are often congested. Public transportation systems usually do not run on that day or at least not on their regular routes. Labor Day is a federal holiday and always falls on the first Monday of September. All government offices, schools and organizations and many businesses are closed. Some public celebrations may be held and many picnics and barbecues are held. For many football teams, it is the start of the football season. The first Labor Day was held in 1882. Its beginnings stem from the desire of the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for working people. It became a federal holiday in 1894. Many people who barbeque already have and use their favorite recipes for their beef, pork and chicken.

Humboldt School enrollment numbers are up

Preliminary enrollment figures indicate another increase for the Humboldt Community School District. During Monday’s regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, Humboldt Superintendent Greg Darling said numbers continue to climb above projected expectations. While the official enrollment count won’t take place until October, Darling says numbers after the start of classes on Monday show another positive increase. Darling says preliminary indications are that the increase will be well in excess of 20 students.
