Since I’m not going to have time to actually go to the fair this year, I decided to take a stroll through Memory Lane and dreamed up old memories of the Iowa State Fair. And of course the first thing I thought of was the food! I dreamed of funnel cakes, along with corn dogs, turkey legs, lemonade and a few other good things. If you aren’t going to make it to the fair, you really can make some recipes that will taste almost like you were walking through the fair – except you won’t have the ambiance of the fair and your feet will thank you for not going! I was amazed at how many copycat recipes I was able to find on line when I searched. I’ve included a few for you to try making and comparing to the good food at the fair. It might even taste better if we aren’t walking through all the food stands wanting to eat everything in sight all in one day. Our taste buds might enjoy maybe one goody a week or month so you don’t gain 10 pounds in one day at the fair!

Following a one-hour closed session meeting last Friday, the Humboldt City Council issued a terse statement saying it strongly disapproved of the actions of Humboldt Mayor Walter Jensen in relation to criminal charges filed in Polk County earlier this year. The statement was signed by all five council members and was read at Monday night’s Humboldt City Council meeting by City Council member John Sleiter. It reads as follows: “We, the members of the Humboldt City Council, hereby publicly express our strong disapproval of the actions of Mayor Jensen with respect to the criminal charges currently pending against him in Polk County. His conduct has put the city of Humboldt and the City Council in an embarrassing position.
Humboldt High softball player Avery Terwilliger was named first-team all-state in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls Association of Softball Coaches. The other area player selected was West Bend-Mallard/GCB senior catcher Cassie Gearhart, who received honorable mention honors in Class 1A. Terwilliger, a freshman this past summer, was the Wildcats’ starting pitcher. Batting lefthanded in the upper order of the lineup, Terwilliger led the entire North Central Conference in hitting with a .604 average and finished as the only player in the NCC not to strike out in league play. Overall, Terwilliger led the Wildcats with a .536 average. She drove in a team-high 39 runs.
I learned a lot about spinning wool when I visited with Lyle Schwendemann and his wife, Pat. The pictures today feature his spinning wheel and his spinning process, but in visiting with Pat, I found out he does a lot of the cooking also. Lyle and some friends got into spinning when another friend was going to teach the group about spinning. They pooled their money and bought a spinning wheel from New Zealand. Lyle says you can buy them on line now but the wheel he is using actually came from New Zealand. I didn’t ask what kind of wood it was made of but it was pretty enough to be an accessory in your home. It was really interesting to visit with Lyle about his spinning. I had so many questions that he ended up sending me a “Recipe” or method for his spinning. I knew I could get this into the Cook of the Week and I bet it has never been repeated (the recipe for spinning wool, that is!) He gets the wool from the Erickson’s west of town. He had a sweater sitting on a table.
