COOK OF THE WEEK - KNITTERS AND CROCHETERS

The Knitters and Crocheters meet on the second Thursday of every month at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt (except in December). Knitters and Crocheters was started way back in 2003 by Betty Burkhart. When I visited them during their October meeting it was so interesting. As people started to come they shared a cup of coffee and a snack along with lots of conversation. Then they had “Show and Tell,” only I added a word to it – “Show and Tell and Donate.” Each person got up and shared with the group what they had made in the previous month. And then it was added to the pile as shown in the first picture. There were baby booties, hats, mittens, scarves, pot holders, dish rags, afghans, shawls and any other thing made of yarn you might think of. During any given year they make and give 1,000 or more items. A first encounter for me was receiving a prayer shawl from FUMC when my father passed away. The Knitters and Crocheters make many prayer shawls.

LuVerne couple celebrates 70 years together

“Seventy years together and we’re still on our honeymoon,” quips 88-year-old Allen Blake. “She puts up with me and that’s the truth,” he quickly adds. It’s that kind of rapier wit and general fun-loving sense of humor that has endeared Allen to wife Eunice over the past seven decades. The LuVerne couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Read about their romance, marriage and how they ended up in LuVerne in the Oct. 16 Humboldt Independent.
