COOK OF THE WEEK - HCMH DIETARY DEPARTMENT

Oct. 5 through Oct. 11, was National Food Service Workers Week so I decided I should visit with Mary Olson and the other people in the hospital cafeteria of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Including the dietician, they have 18 employees who work in the cafeteria. They make an average of 260 meals per day serving hospital in-patients, Long Term Care residents, Assisted Living residents and Meals on Wheels. They operate the cafeteria for staff and visitors from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. And from experience you can’t beat the good food and the reasonable cost. Mary told me that the workers come from many of the surrounding towns. There is a big diversity of age and backgrounds. Some of the people come from cities and some come from small towns.

Growth continues for Sister's Homestyle Entrees

A business that started as a hobby three years ago has grown to the point where they have purchased a 25,000 square foot building in Humboldt’s Northwest Industrial Park. Sister’s Homestyle Entrees, owned by Deb and Bret Davis, has grown from just a single employee when they started in 2011 to 31 employees today. They anticipate hiring seven more people by the end of the year. Sister’s has gone from preparing 200 meals a month to more than 38,000 meals a month with a customer list in excess of 1,600. “It’s just kept growing and growing,” Deb Davis said.
