Deb Davis is Iowa Small Business Person of the Year

Deb Davis of Sister’s Homestyle Entrees of Humboldt has been selected as the Iowa Small Business Person of the Year.Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced on Monday the Small Business Person of the Year winners from the 50 states.A panel is currently reviewing all the packages and a national winner and two runners-up will be selected and announced at a later date. With more than 25 years of experience in the food service industry, Deb decided she wanted to provide a service that would make the family meal time she valued so much available to those who were short on time, so she started Sister's Homestyle Entrees in 2010. The home cooked, packaged and frozen meals have grown from 200 meals a month when the business started to 42,000 meals today. Council approves street and alley work

Public works projects around the city were the main topic of discussion during a 55-minute meeting of the Humboldt City Council Monday night. Most of the action centered around city streets and alleys. Because there are additional funds left over from last summer’s street improvement project, the city solicited bids for additional work from Blacktop Service Company of Humboldt, the general contractor for last year’s seal coat and pavement patching projects. “We budgeted for $1.2 million, and the amount of scheduled work was well below that. We wanted to see what other areas we could target without doing a full-depth street reconstruction of two blocks. We don’t have the funds for that, but we do have monies for additional work to try to address some of these nagging issues,” Humboldt City Administrator Aaron Burnett said. Four projects totaling $64,122.25 were approved, involving two alleys and two streets. Read about them in this week's Humboldt Independent.

COOK OF THE WEEK - DOK STEVENS-DEHRING

When Dok Stevens-Dehring volunteered to be the Cook of the Week she told me she lived in the house that was slowly turning blue. And even without the address I knew what house she was talking about and exactly where I was going to be visiting her for her interview! Dok and her husband Aaron Dehring have been renovating their Victorian home which will be 100 years old next year. Dok told me that people comment on their painting the house blue with white trim. She thinks blue is really a happy color and the white really brings out the details. I’m not positive but I think she said there is some purple there too. In their backyard they have built a raised-waist high garden in which they raised lots of vegetables and flowers last year. They have a daughter, Amelia, who is in the fourth grade in Humboldt. Dok is an Environmental Health and Safety Manager. She has her Masters from Western Michigan University.
