110 participate in Dam/Skunk 8K race in Humboldt

Led by overall winner Ashenafi Hatte, a total of 110 runners and walkers participated in the annual Dam/Skunk race held last Saturday, Aug. 1. The 8K event began at the Reasoner Dam in Humboldt and finished at the Rutland Dam, with the bulk of the course on the scenic Three Rivers Trail. Ashenafi, 19, who runs for the Iowa Central Community College cross country team, was the overall winner with a time of 27:49.64. Blake Whalen, 20, another ICCC runner, was runner-up at 28:00.77 and Denzel Fogg third in 28:09.89. See full story in the Humboldt Independent Newspaper. McDaniel begins 1st year as head VB coach

There’s probably no one more excited to begin the 2015 high school volleyball season than Justin McDaniel. McDaniel, who has served the district the past 15 years as assistant coach of the program, takes over the reins after veteran head coach Connie Rasmussen stepped down late in the season last fall. McDaniel’s hiring was approved by the Humboldt School Board back in late-May. McDaniel will be assisted by Kathi Beach, who is moving up from the ninth grade program. Sara Lange, a middle school instructor who is beginning her second year in the district, is taking over the duties as ninth grade coach. “I am excited about becoming the new head coach as I feel a lot of good things have been happening with the program in the past few years,” McDaniel said.
