Humboldt girls 8th, boys 12th in 3A state cross country meet

Humboldt's girls placed eighth and the boys were 12th in the team scoring of the Class 3A state cross country meet held on Saturday (Oct. 31) at Lakeside Golf Course north of Fort Dodge. Isabella Luu was 19th overall in 19:48.7 to pace the Wildcat girls while Ivan Rasmussen was 64th in 17:35 to lead Humboldt's boys.See full story, photos and statistics from the meet in this week's Humboldt Independent Newspaper. Rising star Damon Dotson to perform free concert

Damon Dotson, a rising star singer/songwriter, will perform a free concert in Humboldt on Sunday, Nov. 22. The Okoboji native will perform at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Now living in Des Moines, Dotson has opened for legendary performers like BB King, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, Huey Lewis and The News, as well as modern artists like Matt Nathanson, Edwin McCain and the Lone Bellow. Dotson is a popular attraction at Okoboji each year. He has sustained his career for 10 years, including the release of four of his original albums and countless shows throughout the Midwest with a record label or management. Dotson just recorded a new CD and got married in September. Humboldt’s Michelle McKenna said she has been persistent in trying to bring Dotson to Humboldt. “A group of us saw him at the Little Swan Winery in Estherville a few summers ago as he was playing on a Sunday afternoon. I immediately loved his music and style.

Three way race for Mayor

Tuesday, Nov. 3, marks the general election for city offices around the county. The last day to request an absentee ballot be mailed to your home is this Friday, Oct. 30, by the close of the business day (4:30 p.m.) at the Humboldt County Auditor’s Office. People may vote absentee at the Auditor’s Office on Monday, Nov. 2, or Tuesday, Nov. 3, until 11 a.m. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. in the towns of Humboldt and Gilmore City. The polls will be open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., at all other polling locations across the county. In Humboldt, there is a three-person race for mayor, Incumbent Walter Jensen is being challenged by First Ward Councilman Dan Scholl and local resident Barry Ellis. Other races in the city are uncontested. John Sleiter is running unopposed for Second Ward Council member and Joel Goodell is running unopposed for Third Ward. The First Ward City Council seat will be filled by write-in ballot.

Gilbert ousts Humboldt volleyball team in region semifinal

Humboldt's hopes of making a deep tournament run came up short Thursday night (Oct. 29) as Gilbert (21-10) turned back the Wildcats in three sets in the Clarion gym. The Tigers downed the Wildcats by scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-22. Humboldt closed out with an overall match record of 28-5. See story, photos and stats in the Humboldt Independent. Webster City blanks Humboldt in playoff opener, 35-0

Humboldt's football season ended Wednesday night (Oct. 28) in the first round of the Class 3A State Playoffs as the host Lynx shutout the Wildcats, 35-0 on a cold, windy night in Webster City.
