Humboldt County Fair promises top acts

Although its five months away (July 26-Aug. 1), the Humboldt County Fair Board has a top-notch schedule of entertainment set for the 2016 Humboldt County Fair. This year, the Fair Board booked SongBlast dueling guitars for a Thursday night (July 28) musical and comedy performance at the grandstand. The best part of the show is that it is free. What’s better than two dueling pianos? A pair of interactive dueling guitars delivering a fun, non-offensive stream of endless songs from yesterday and today. Pat Balder and Glen Everhart bring their consummate stage professionalism and high energy performance to the Humboldt County Fair grandstand stage. See video of their performances at www.songblast.net. They’ve played at the Clay County Fair, Minnesota State Fair, plus five other state fairs corporate events, and much more. The opening act will be comic magician Jerry Frasier.

Hog Slat expands operations in Humboldt

Construction is under way for a 106,000 square foot warehouse and manufacturing expansion project at Hog Slat in Humboldt. It is the second major expansion by Hog Slat in Humboldt in the past eight years and will lead to the possible addition of 10 more employees. Hog Slat currently employs 120 at its Humboldt facilities. Sande Construction is the general contractor and has been heating the ground to pour footings through the winter months. Completion of the 250’ by 425’ steel building is expected to be done by late May or early June. The new warehouse is being built in the Northwest Industrial Park on lots along 16th Avenue North (across from Union Cemetery). This is north and east of the current Hog Slat facilities. About 80 percent of the new structure will be used for warehouse space with about 20 percent for the manufacture of steel mats, currently produced in Hog Slat's Clinton, NC plant.

COOK OF THE WEEK - GIRL SCOUT LEADERS

Last week I had the opportunity to meet with almost all of the 25 leaders of the 12 Springvale Girl Scout Troops in the Humboldt area. They have girls ranging from kindergarten age through the 11th grade, totaling 105 girls this year. The girls in the troops live in Humboldt, Dakota City, Gilmore City, Livermore and Bode. Some of the troops meet twice a month and the rest of the troops meet once a month. Most of the troops meet in our local churches, which they told me, “They truly appreciate.” “We start meeting in September and end our Girl Scout year with a Bridging/Court of Awards ceremony in May,” said Kathy Eck, Service Unit Director. She oversees or coordinates all of the troop leaders and is also the Community Cookie Chairman. This Bridging/Court of Awards ceremony is where some of the girls “bridge” to a new level of Girl Scouts and all of the girls receive the awards they have earned throughout the year.
