COOK OF THE WEEK - GIRL SCOUT TROOPS

Once again we are visiting with some Girl Scout Troops and learning what different ages of girls do in their different troops. I have found it interest-ing to learn that they all don’t do the same activities at the same times. The selling of Girl Scout cookies is one activity that all of the troops have in common however. Troop 217 – The Daisy Kin-dergarten Troop is the first year for all of these girls as a Girl Scout. The girls are working towards earning their flower petals. They meet once a month for about two hours. So far this year they have done various fun activities. Sep-tember was their first meeting so they learned who their friends were in their troop. In October they went on a nature walk around the Swan Pond. Novem-ber was spent making Christmas tree ornaments for the Girl Scout tree at the Methodist Church Tree Walk. They also worked on cutting and sewing pieces for a quilt the girls worked on for a family they sponsored for a Christmas basket.

Bradgate looks at flooding solutions

After a meeting of Bradgate City Council Tuesday night, Mayor Kim Schultz said he would sign a petition to have new drainage relief tile installed in the city to combat flooding. The council agreed to have a new north/south tile line installed along the east edge of town, running to an outlet near the West Fork of the Des Moines River. Jasong Bendixen, a project coordinator with Jacobson-Westergard and Associates, Humboldt County’s main drainage engineering firm, had been working with residents in the town since last week, along with Humboldt County Emergency Management Coordinator Melody Larson. Both were in attendance at Tuesday’s Bradgate City Council meeting. “You have a 100-year-old drainage system that is full of tree roots,” Bendixen said of the crux of the drainage problems in the community. Tile lines are plugged, citizens basements are flooded and water is coming back in as fast as it is pumped out. The entire town of Bradgate is part of Drainage District No.

COOK OF THE WEEK - GIRL SCOUT TROOPS

As the Girl Scouts of Humboldt County are still out selling cookies, we are continuing to visit with some of the troops to hear of their activities and get some of their fabulous recipes using Girl Scout cookies. Brownie Troop 367 – “We are second graders in the first year of brownies. Every year we decorate a tree for the Tree Walk and take donations to give to the Food Program. We use the money we earn from our cookie sales to buy supplies to make cards for various places, for crafts, service projects and fun stuff. We are learning about water and how to conserve it. Our leaders are Marnetta Fisher and Stephanie Robinson.” Junior Troops 32 and 27 – “Troops 32 and 27 are Juniors in Girl Scouts. We have been working together for two years and it has been a rewarding experience for both ages of girls.
