Rotary Fly-In Breakfast is Sunday, Aug. 7


Blue Sky Spray Service of Newell is basing their aerial operation out of Humboldt and will be a feature in the hangar for the Humboldt Rotary Club’s 16th annual Fly-In Breakfast on Sunday morning, Aug. 7. Proceeds will go towards the new KiddieCats daycare project.

The 16th annual Humboldt Rotary Club Fly-In Breakfast will be Sunday, Aug. 7, from 7 a.m. to noon (rain or shine). Seating will be available inside the airport’s new hangar.
In addition to pilots flying in from all over the Midwest, one of the featured planes will be from Blue Sky Spray Service of Newell, which is basing their aerial operations out of Humboldt.
Airplane rides will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon for $20 per person.
The Big Breakfast, served by the Gronbach Grill Team, includes pancakes, eggs, sausage and drink. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, with children five and under free. Tickets will be available at the door or in advance from any Rotary Club member.
Proceeds will go towards the new KiddieCats daycare project.

Storm causes tree and property damage


Opheim Seed & Chemical, located two miles east of Thor, suffered extensive damage from high winds in a severe thunderstorm that moved through the area early last Sunday morning on July 17. Humboldt County was wracked by strong shear winds early Sunday morning, July 17, causing a large-scale amount of property damage at various locales.
One of the hardest hit areas was the city of Renwick, which had structural damage to some businesses and one home, many uprooted and broken trees, and a power outage that extended 22 hours.
Damage was also reported east of Livermore, north of Hardy and south of LuVerne, between Renwick and LuVerne in Vernon Township.
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors declared the city of Renwick in a state of emergency due to straight line winds that occurred around 3 a.m. on Sunday.
A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Humboldt County with the possibility of large hail and damaging winds.

HUMBOLDT BASEBALL TEAM TO STATE!!!!

The Humboldt High baseball team rallied from a 7-2 deficit to upend Gilbert, 9-7 Wednesday night (July 20) in a Class 3A Substate Tournament game in Boone to advance into the state tournament. The Wildcats, 25-7 on the season, will play Pella (30-8) in a first round game at Principal Park in Des Moines at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26.

Humboldt softball leads NCC with 8 all-conference picks

Humboldt was clearly the dominant softball team in the North Central Conference in 2016.
The Wildcats’ dominance was cemented with eight players named to the post-season all-conference team by league coaches.
Humboldt, which finished 26-7 overall, 13-1 in the NCC, had six juniors and two eighth graders named to post-season honors.
Junior shortstop Avery Terwilliger was a unanimous first-team pick, along with junior centerfielder Beth Duffield. Other first-team picks include eighth grade pitcher Ellie Jacobson and eighth grade outfielder Carlie Thompson.
Humboldt has a trio of juniors on the second-team unit, they include catcher Kelsey Peters, first baseman Halie George and third baseman Taylor Gidel, who was listed at utility/designated hitter. Junior outfielder Olivia Birdsell was chosen third-team.

This morning when I awoke I still didn’t know what I would write about for the Cook of the Week. I had asked several people and no one got back to me and I hate to be too much of a pest. Humboldt baseball team into substate final

The Humboldt High baseball team advanced into a Class 3A substate final after holding off Webster City, 6-2 Monday night (July 18) in Algona in a district championship game. The Wildcats improved to 24-7 overall with the win. They'll play Gilbert for the right to advance to the state tournament. Gilbert defeated Boone, 6-3 Monday night in Boone.

Brady Shelgren and Chris Witzke combined to pitch a 1-hitter for Humboldt, which scored 5 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie.

The Humboldt/Gilbert substate final will be played at 8 p.m. at Memorial Park in Boone.
