Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Sumner is Sept. 7

Trike races were a popular event last year and will return for the Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Sumner, Wednesday, Sept. 7. Humboldt Independent file photo.

People don’t have to live in Ames or Iowa City to revel in the good-natured rivalry that exists between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
Based on the success and positive comments from last year’s Humboldt/Dakota City Chamber-supported WHO RVTV event, the Chamber is planning another celebration early next month, on the eve of another Cardinal and Gold and Black and Gold showdown on the football field.
The Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Sumner will be Wednesday, Sept. 7, beginning at 3 p.m. and continuing until 9 p.m. or later.
There will be food, fun, contests, prizes, business specials and activities for the entire family.
To find out more about this fun event, read the full story in this week's Humboldt Independent. Receive either print or digital online editions by clicking on the link at the top of this page.

You can’t help but notice the enthusiasm in the Humboldt High School pre-season cross country camp.
The Wildcat girls, winners of six of the last seven North Central Conference team championships, are focused on winning an unprecedented fourth straight title. The boys, meanwhile, are looking to win the school’s first team title since 1995 after placing second last year.
“There is a lot of excitement within the program. We do have the talent to do some pretty good things. As anybody who has ever coached for any period of time knows, not only do you have to have the talent, but the right work ethic, attitude and a little bit lucky in regards to injuries,” Humboldt head coach Dean Clasen said. “If everything falls into place like we hope it does, we do have an opportunity to do some really good things this season.”

Wildcats set to defend NCC title

After winning the North Central Conference championship in each of the last two seasons, one might think the well has run dry for the Humboldt High volleyball team – far from it.
Thanks to the return of four players who received all-conference honors, the Wildcats and second-year head coach Justin McDaniel are poised to make another title run.
Last year Humboldt rolled to a 28-5 season in which the Wildcats won the outright North Central Conference title with a perfect 7-0 record.
While those are all building blocks for success, McDaniel says his team is clearly focused on the task in front of them.
“We won the conference two seasons ago and that gave us confidence and added fire, so we came out last year and took it one game at a time and for the first time in school history we won the conference title outright,” McDaniel said.

Wildcats face a lot of unknowns entering new football season

The Humboldt High football team begins its season this week when they visit Webster City in a non-district game on Friday, Aug. 26. Independent photo by Phil Monson.

Humboldt veteran head football coach Greg Thomas says his squad is facing a lot of unknowns entering the 2016 season.
Not only will the Wildcats rely on a new cast of players, they are embarking on a new district schedule in Class 3A which has Humboldt going west for the first time in over a decade.
“We’re really excited about the upcoming season. There are a lot of unknowns with a brand new schedule with some teams we have never played and some teams we haven’t played since 2004-2005,” said Thomas, who begins his 17th season at the helm.
Humboldt is coming off a 4-6 season in which the Wildcats went 3-3 and placed fourth in the former district two grouping, good enough to secure the final playoff spot in district play, where they lost at Webster City in a first round contest.
“Last year’s seniors are gone and we have some new faces and a lot of young guys who will get some opportunities to play this year,” Thomas said.

Stronger Wolverine volleyball team ready for new season

Veteran volleyball coach Chris Martin, who is new to the West Bend-Mallard/GC-B program this fall, believes teams are made in the off-season.
If the growth of the Wolverine girls in the weight room over the last six months is any indication, then WBM/GCB should be vastly improved from last year’s squad that finished 6-29 overall, 2-8 in Twin Lakes Conference play.
Martin brings 29 years of experience to the program. Having recently moved to West Bend, Martin and his wife plan on retiring in the community. They currently work at Allen Nursing College in Waterloo, where they teach ultrasound/physics.
“I’ve learned a lot of things over the 29 years. I’ll probably retire in West Bend. It is a nice community,” Martin said.
