COOK OF THE WEEK - TERRY KOCHER

“A MAN WHO LOVES TO BAKE ALL KINDS OF PIES!” That is how I’m describing our cook this week. Terry Kocher says he really enjoys making pies and should probably do it as a second job, but he hasn’t done that yet. Many meals they eat end with pie as the dessert. YUMM!
I visited with Terry Kocher while he was working at their old house in Dakota City making it ready for selling. Through the years they lived there, a lot of changes have been made to the house and at one time it was separated into two parts to make two apartments. He showed me through the home and showed me all of the interesting changes. I always think it is so interesting to see how a house can transform into a completely different look.

Brady Ross makes transition to fullback

BRADY ROSS

For Brady Ross, making the transition from linebacker to fullback has been challenging – but one that he is fully embracing.
Ross, a 2015 Humboldt High School graduate, made a name for himself on the scout team last fall as a true freshman. He’s now listed at No. 2 on the depth chart at fullback entering fall drills.
“The instinct is to tackle people, but that’s a 10-yard penalty if I do it on offense,” Ross said. “That won’t fly.”
“The biggest challenge is the new experience of it as a whole,” Ross said. “As you know in high school I was a tailback, which technically, a fullback is considered a running back like that, but really it’s not even close to being the same position.”

Kevin Dresser brings strong message to hometown

Kevin Dresser

Kevin Dresser returned to Humboldt where it all began last weekend and shared an inspiring message.
Dresser, head wrestling coach at Virginia Tech University who was named National Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the NCAA championships last March, talked about his growth and development as an athlete and coach before a captive audience at R. Wesley Carlson Auditorium on Aug. 6.
Dresser, a 1981 graduate of HHS, was a two-time state high school wrestling champion before heading off to the University of Iowa, where he won a national title for coach Dan Gable and the Hawkeyes in 1986.
A successful high school wrestling coach in Virginia, Dresser got the call to become head coach at VT in April of 2006. Last year the Hokies placed fourth as a team in the NCAA championships, their highest finish in school history.

Jacobson played key role at Coe

BEN JACOBSON

Ben Jacobson had no trouble assuming a leadership role on the Coe College baseball team last spring.
With one season left in his career, Jacobson hopes to lead the Kohawks to bigger and better things in 2017.
Jacobson, a 2013 Humboldt High School graduate, led the Kohawk pitching staff with a 7-1 overall won-loss record, including five wins in Iowa Conference play.
Jacobson, a second-team all-conference pick and a third-team all-region selection, pitched 67.2 innings compiling an earned run average of 4.79. He had 41 strikeouts and 23 walks. Jacobson started in 25 of the 30 games played
