Wildcat girls, boys 2nd in Humboldt cross country meet

Humboldt's girls and boys both finished runner-up in the team scoring of the Humboldt Invitational Cross Country meet held Monday evening, Sept. 19 at lower Sheldon Park.

The Wildcat boys finished with 98 team points. Garner-Hayfield/Ventura was the team champ with 54. Mason City was third at 100. Joe Kunert ran 12th overall in 18:03 to pace the Wildcat boys.

Humboldt's girls totaled 78 points to finish seven behind team champion Mason City (71). Emmetsburg was third at 111. Humboldt freshman standout Bryce Gidel was the overall winner with a time of 20:22.72. Gabby Kent ran third in 20:56.68.

Wildcats crush Algona in homecoming game, 45-14

The Humboldt football team picked up a big homecoming victory Friday night (Sept. 16) by crushing the Algona Bulldogs, 45-14 on Mason Maach Field before a big home crowd. The triumph improved Humboldt's record to 2-2 overall on the season, 1-1 in district play. Humboldt will play at home again next week when they host Storm Lake in another Class 3A District One contest. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

Humboldt County to send 11 on Honor Flight

Eleven Humboldt County veterans, most representing the Vietnam-era, will be boarding a jet this Saturday for a one-day trip to Washington, D.C.
The Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight will be making its 13th Honor Flight trip with more than 100 veterans aboard.
The Honor Flight gives those participating a chance to see the military memorials, the Lincoln Memorial and the changing of the guard ceremony of Arlington National Cemetery, as well as a bus tour of sites of interest in Washington, D.C.
Humboldt County veterans making the trip this Saturday will be Roger McBride, Daniel Erickson, Jerry Bacon, George Hanselman, Vernon Abbas, Danny Ellifritz, William Frideres and Terry Arnold. Other veterans going from Humboldt County are Larry Davidson, Donald Wason and Gary Lowe. Davidson and Wason will be leaders, who assist other veterans with mobility issues.

Mock Hazmat training on Highway 3

The scenario was a large leak from an anhydrous nurse tank after a vehicle accident. The Region V Hazardous Materials exercise was held Tuesday evening, Sept. 6, at the NEW Coop location on Highway 3 in Humboldt. The situation not only involved an accident with victims, but also reports of lung and eye irritation from nearby residents. Instructor Jerry Eslick of Professional Rescue Innovations led the exercise along with Humboldt County Emergency Management coordinator Melody Larson.
