Humboldt volleyball team holds off Algona in 5 sets

The No. 8 ranked Humboldt High volleyball team opened Class 3A regional tournament play Wednesday night (Oct. 19) by holding off Algona in five sets in the Humboldt gym. The Wildcats won by scores of 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 23-25 and 15-10. Humboldt moved to 32-1 on the season and will host Roland-Story in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. Roland-Story defeated Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in four sets. The other half of the region saw Gilbert sweep Saydel in three sets and North Polk shutting our Clarke Osceola in three sets.

Humboldt's varsity football team suffered a 42-6 loss at Sioux City Bishop Heelan tonight (Oct. 14) in Class 3A District One action. The Wildcats fall to 2-6 overall on the season, 1-5 in district play. Humboldt will wrap up its regular season on the road at LeMars on Oct. 21. Harvest Moon Madness planned for Oct. 27

Shoppers will be able to take advantage of bargains in downtown Humboldt during “Harvest Moon Madness” on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 4-7 p.m.
The Bringing Back the Avenue group is sponsoring the fun evening where participating merchants will be in costume, there will be a scarecrow decorating contest, kids activities, lots of food choices (stew, soup, chili, candied apples and more), and free hot chocolate.
Businesses or individuals can participate in the Scarecrow decorating contest. Entry forms are available at downtown retailers. Scarecrows may be set up in the downtown plaza park anytime on Wednesday, Oct. 26, to be judged and then on display for the Oct. 27 event. The winner will receive a trophy and bragging rights.

A cranky Irish maid, a Cockney ladies man, a hat obsessed actress, a self involved playwright, an adulterous politician, a crazed radical, a Bohemian artist, and a gun slinging sweetheart all walk into an English country manor… Its not the start of a terrible joke, it’s the plot of “Death by Design,” the Humboldt Dramatic Arts Guild’s next dinner theatre performance!
The show will be held at the River Valley Orchard and Winery on October 21 and 22. The winery is located at 1645 220th Street, about four miles west of Humboldt on Highway 3. The doors open at 5:30 p.m., Dinner is served at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Dinner will be lasagna with minestrone soup and garlic bread twists. The winery will also have a full bar available, as well as a variety of their own wines for sale.
