COOK OF THE WEEK - APPLE RECIPES

crisp mornings, we know fall weather is upon us. For us Iowans and other Midwestern people that means winter and that dirty four-letter word (s-n-o-w) is just around the corner. Unless you might be one of the lucky ones preparing to head south or southwest for the cold months.
But let’s look at the bright side of these cool, crisp mornings. They make perfect apple ripening weather, apple picking weather, and apple baking or fixing-other-delicious-ways apple weather right in the comfort of your own cozy kitchen. The aroma of baking or cooking apples, cinnamon and nutmeg altogether in your kitchen is almost heavenly! For the kids it’s caramel apple time and bobbing for apples at Halloween parties.
Apples are a really healthy snack for kids and even healthier dipping them in peanut butter instead of caramel or just eating them sliced or right from the tree if you are lucky enough to have a tree in your own yard. How about an apple pizza? Anything is possible!

‘Cats fall in heartbreaker, 43-42

Humboldt junior receiver Eli Sande hauls in a Drew Thomas pass for a touchdown in the first quarter of Friday's game at Mason Maach Field in the final home varsity contest of the season. The Wildcats lost by a point, 43-42. Read all about it in Phil Monson's sports pages in this week's paper.

Humboldt came up just short in an offensive explosion which featured a combined 95 points Friday night (Oct. 7), as the Wildcats fell to Sergeant Bluff-Luton by a score of 43-42.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout with Humboldt taking a 28-21 lead at halftime on the strength of a 63-yard TD pass from quarterback Drew Thomas to wide receiver Devon Clark. Eli Sande also enjoyed a big receiving night with multiple TD catches.
Humboldt trailed 43-36 with 4:50 left in the fourth quarter. Thomas returned from an injury to engineer a scoring drive, taking it in himself from 15 yards out with 1:17 left to play. Humboldt elected to go for the two-point conversion for the win, but could not complete the conversion and the Warriors ran out the clock for the win.
Humboldt falls to 1-4 in the district and 2-5 overall. The Wildcats will travel to Sioux City Bishop Heelan for a 7 p.m. game on Oct. 14.

U.S. flags sold by Friends of the Parks

Larry Curran, board member of Humboldt Friends of the Parks, holds a new American flag and honor banner that will be displayed along Humboldt’s two main thoroughfares, Sumner Avenue and 13th Street, hopefully in time for the general election and Veteran’s Day. The non-profit Friends of the Parks are selling flags with an honorary banner for a cost of $100. Proceeds above costs will go towards the local parks and swimming pool. Contact Humboldt City Hall for further information. Humboldt Independent photo.

A community service project by a local non-profit will beautify the community in a number of ways.
The Friends of the Parks, a local 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt organization, that raises funds to give back to the city’s parks and swimming pool, is selling U.S. flags to be flown on Sumner Avenue and perhaps 13th Street, during special holidays in the community.
“It’s been 20 years since the U.S. flags downtown have been replaced. They are getting pretty tattered and the flag standards are in rough shape,” said Friends of the Parks Board member Larry Curran.
The flags sell for $100, with a limit of 100 flags to be sold. A flag will be on display at Humboldt City Hall and people can also pick up an application form/brochure there. People can also get a digital brochure online at www.cityofhumboldt.org, or find out information on the city’s Facebook page.
