Trump, Underberg and Lee claim victories in Humboldt County

By Kent Thompson
It was a good night for the Grand Old Party (GOP) on a national, state and local level Tuesday. According to unofficial election results released by the Humboldt County Auditor’s Office late Tuesday night, Donald Trump, who appeared to be on his way to winning the presidency, was the choice of the overwhelming majority of Humboldt County voters with 3,564 votes, with 1,251 for Hillary Clinton. Libertarian Gary Johnson polled 127 votes in the county and petition candidate from Utah, Evan McMullin, earned 40.
In local races, Republican Erik Underberg of Livermore unseated longtime incumbent John “Mort” Christianson of Bode, and two other candidates for the District 4 County Supervisor chair. Unofficial totals had Underberg winning with 571 votes to 197 for Christianson. Randy Foth of Livermore gained 90 votes and Christine Bothne of Bode collected 89. There was one write-in.

AmericInn building in Humboldt

The former Hydrobikes location (known locally as the UBC corner) at 13th Street and 3rd Avenue North will be the home to the new Humboldt AmericInn Hotel and Suite. Site preparation is beginning and developers hope to have the building completed in time for an early summer opening. Humboldt Independent photo.

Humboldt will be getting a new 41-room, two-story AmericInn Hotel and Suite at the intersection of 13th Street South (Highway 169) and 3rd Avenue North.
The location was one of four potential sites identified during a potential investor meeting last December in Humboldt.
Dirt work has begun at the site and it is hoped that the new business can be open prior to Memorial Day and the anticipated 2017 travel and wedding season.
An investor group of 25 people, most from the local area, formed a Limited Liability Corporation. The investor group asked not to be publically identified, but are contributing to the overall project in a very significant way.
According to Humboldt County Economic Development Director Alissa O’Connor, the total project is expected to be just under $4 million, with investor equity of an estimated $1.2 million.
