Lifesaving technology is now available at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH).
A new 3D digital mammography machine has been purchased and is in use at the hospital’s radiology department. The HCMH Board of Directors approved the $392,250 purchase at its meeting this past August.
HCMH is excited to now offer 3D mammography exams, using the latest in digital technology.
Three-dimension (3D) exams are clinically proven to be superior to conventional 2D exams, pinpointing the detection of breast cancers, while simultaneously decreasing the number of women asked to return for additional testing.

Whittlesey tabbed for Humboldt City Council

Retired Humboldt optometrist Kirk Whittlesey was appointed to the Humboldt City Council Monday night. Whittlesey will be serving the at-large unexpired term of Darrell Rusher through 2017. Humboldt Independent photo.

By Kent Thompson
There may not be a doctor in the house, but there is one on the Humboldt City Council.
Retired Humboldt optometrist Kirk Whittlesey was sworn in Monday night as Humboldt’s newest City Council member. Whittlesey succeeds Darrell Rusher, who resigned last month after serving the better part of the past two decades.
Whittlesey will be filling an at-large Council seat, serving the remainder of Rusher’s four-year term, through 2017.
Whittlesey ended a 41-year optometry practice in 2015, working with his father, Dr. Don Whittlesey for several years, before operating the eye clinic himself from 1987 to 2015.

COOK OF THE WEEK - FOUR GENERATIONS

Four generations of cooks gathered recently to bake Christmas cookies. Pictured (l to r) are: Isabelle Benjamin, Becky Juelfs, Isabelle, Petraya Gunther, and Payten Gunther.

Not too often do we see four generations all in the kitchen and able to be baking cookies all at the same time. Last week I witnessed a wonderful family get-together of mother, daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter ranging in age from 95 to 8 all having their hands in the help of baking Christmas cookies. I was at the home of Isabelle Benjamin who lives at Springville Independent Living in Humboldt. When I knocked on her door her daughter came to the door. To my surprise I knew her through her husband’s family. We all had a delightful visit and did some reminiscing.

The old saying goes – nothing beats experience.
If that’s the case, the experience and growing pains the Humboldt High School boys’ basketball team went through in last year’s 7-15 season should translate into more victories this winter.
Wildcat head coach Jason Hoag begins his second year at the helm of the Humboldt program, which finished 5-9 and fifth in the North Central Conference standings last season.
