Humboldt boys top SCC, girls fall

Humboldt's varsity girls and boys split a doubleheader at South Central Calhoun Monday night (Jan. 30) in Rockwell City.

The Wildcat girls fell in the first game, 56-47, while the boys rallied for a 65-54 victory behind Calvin Carlson's 29-point scoring performance. Carlson hit five 3-point baskets on the night as Humboldt improved to 6-8 overall. The Wildcat girls slipped to 11-5 overall in their non-conference loss to the Titans.

Both teams return to action Tuesday night (Jan. 31) when they host Hampton-Dumont in a conference quad, which includes two JV games. Humboldt will visit Webster City on Thursday, Feb. 2, and visit Clarion on Feb. 3.

Wildcat girls upend No. 6 ranked Clear Lake, 45-40, boys fall

Humboldt's varsity girls' basketball team, fresh off a stunning, double overtime win over Algona, took their momentum to Clear Lake Friday night (Jan. 27) and handed the No. 6 ranked Lions a 45-40 setback in North Central Conference action. Humboldt improved to 11-4 overall on the season, 8-2 in NCC play.

In the boys' contest, Humboldt fell to the Lions by a final count of 67-44. The loss dipped Humboldt's record to 5-8 overall, 3-6 in the NCC. The Wildcats host Hampton-Dumont on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

HHS girls top Algona in double overtime, Terwilliger hits 1,000 point mark

The Humboldt girls' basketball team picked up their 10th win of the season Thursday night by winning a thrilling, 72-69 double overtime contest over North Central Conference foe Algona. Humboldt senior standout Avery Terwilliger scored 25 points, handed out six assists and made 20 of 21 free throws. In addition, Terwilliger scored her 1,000th career point. She is now at 1,003. Halie George scored 21 points and Sydney Lane made 14 to lead the Wildcats.

Humboldt, 10-4 overall, 7-2 in conference action, will travel to Clear Lake Friday night to face No. 6 ranked Clear Lake in another conference battle.

Algona runs past Humboldt boys

The visiting Algona Bulldogs ran past the Humboldt boys Thursday night (Jan. 26) in high school basketball, pulling away for a 75-42 victory over the Wildcats. Humboldt, now 5-7 overall on the season, 3-5 in North Central Conference play, visits Clear Lake on Friday, Jan. 27 for another NCC matchup.

Humboldt wrestlers to 22-8 in duals

Humboldt's varsity wrestling team capped their regular season Thursday night (Jan. 26) by going 2-1 in a four-team meet in Perry. The Wildcats defeated Perry (54-24) and Greene County (51-24) and lost to Ballard Huxley (42-31). Humboldt is now 22-8 overall on the season. They will be off until Saturday, Feb. 4, when Humboldt hosts a Class 2A Sectional Tournament starting at 12 noon inside the Wildcat gym.

Courtney signs with Simpson College

When the high school cross country season ended three months ago, Humboldt High senior Ryan Courtney felt inside he wasn’t ready to hang up the spikes.
Turns out now he’ll need those shoes after all when he joins the Simpson College cross country team next August. On Monday, Courtney signed a national letter of intent to run for the NCAA Div. III Simpson Storm in Indianola. Courtney will also be a member of the men’s indoor and outdoor track teams.
