Eagle Ridge, downtown development in city 2018 budget

Canopies will be part of the discussion as the city looks to improve the downtown streetscape. The Humboldt City Council has committed to borrow $750,000 to make improvements in a three-block area. See this and other photos at www.humboldtnews.com. Humboldt Independent photo.

By Kent Thompson
Despite having to pare $400,000 from original budget askings, the city of Humboldt is moving forward with a budget that will seek capital improvements and address areas of need as outlined by the Humboldt City Council.
The Council held a pair of budget meetings last week to discuss the 2017-18 budget.
The budget will feature public borrowing to complete Phase III of the Eagle Ridge development project, putting in two north/south streets in the development located on the city’s south side.
In a separate project, the Council authorized funds for the park department to develop a playground park in the Eagle Ridge development to serve the community.
The Humboldt City Council has given verbal approval to borrow $750,000 to begin a downtown streetscape project. No plans or designs have been set forth as yet, but the project would likely include new street lighting and possible changes to the look and feel of Sumner Avenue.
