Quilt of Valor presented to Kinseth

Area quilter Nancy Wiuff (left) made a beautiful and patriotic quilt for Bode’s Arlis Kinseth (right), which was presented last Thursday, just in time for Arlis’s 91st birthday on Sunday, March 12. The quilt was part of the Quilts of Valor project, a nationwide volunteer effort to honor veterans. Submitted photo by James Borlaug.

A Quilt of Valor, an honor of his military service and his longtime community service, was presented to Bode's Arlis Kinseth last week.
Arlis is an Army combat veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He fought in France, Austria and Germany in World War II, and managed to avoid being wounded, he says. But then in Korea, he was hit twice. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his service.
Presenting the quilt to Arlis was Russell Jensen, adjutant of the Bode American Legion Post.
Nancy Wiuff, who made the quilt, came up with the idea of the quilt for Arlis after working on one for a West Bend veteran. Local residents contributed the money for the cost of the materials.

Humboldt hosts statewide education workshop

Lucinda Boyd, an instructional coach in the Humboldt School District, shares her thoughts and ideas during a session on project-based learning at last week's AIW workshop in Humboldt. Independent photo by Phil Monson.

The Humboldt Community School District has been a leader in the state of Iowa when it comes to the application of AIW (Authentic Intellectual Works).
So it was no surprise when educators from across the state exceeded original registration numbers in a mid-year training workshop held last Friday, March 3, at Humboldt Middle School and Humboldt High School.
“The leadership here, from the superintendent to Tammy (Tamela Johnson), Lucinda (Boyd) and her other coaches, has made all the difference in this school district,” Hope Bossard, Director of the Iowa AIW Consortium, said.
“We scored our instruction with a group of teachers from Humboldt and the surrounding areas. We got input from other teachers about the kind of things we teach here and got feedback on ways we can make it better,” Humboldt High School instructor and workshop participant Rodd Mooney said. “That’s a really good process and it helps make us all better instructors.”

Success can be measured in many different ways and anyone close to the Humboldt High School wrestling program can point to a long list of accomplishments by the 2016-17 Wildcats, who were recognized at the team’s banquet last week (Feb. 28).
Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman presided over the evening and distributed numerous awards. Humboldt finished the year with a dual meet record of 23-9 overall, including 5-2 and second in the North Central Conference.
Humboldt also qualified for the regional dual tournament, where they won their semifinal round match before falling to No. 3 ranked Atlantic in the regional finals.
Humboldt also had four individuals qualify for the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines last month.

Dresser poised to put ISU wrestling back on the national map

Kevin Dresser speaks at a press conference on Feb. 22 when he was introduced as head wrestling coach at Iowa State University. Photo courtesy Iowa State Sports Information Department.

Kevin Dresser remembers the long walk across the parking lot outside of Iowa State’s Hilton Coliseum with his father, the late Skip Dresser, and neighbor and middle school wrestling coach Larry Leibold, attended Cyclone wrestling meets in the early 1970s.
He also remembers watching Iowa State wrestler Kelly Ward win a national championship at Hilton Coliseum back in 1979.
Those were among the many memories Dresser shared with the audience last week (Feb. 22) when he was introduced as the new head wrestling coach of the Cyclones.
Dresser, a 1981 Humboldt High School graduate and former national champion at the University of Iowa (1986), was lured away from Virginia Tech University, where he has coached for the past 11 seasons and built the Hokies into a national power.

Commercial garbage rates to increase

A little more on the side, this side dump truck from John's Ag Service seems to be saying, as Humboldt Street Superintendent Chris Ubben (left) blows in snow as a result of last Thursday's 12-inch blast in Humboldt. The National Weather Service reported Humboldt County as the high precipitation total for the state from the late winter storm. Humboldt Independent photo.

Commercial solid waste collection fees will be going up for Humboldt businesses whom utilize the service, if an ordinance approved by the Humboldt City Council last week is passed on three readings.
The Council gave unanimous approval to changes that spell out defined amounts of garbage collected and sets rates for commercial customers who utilize the service.
The current ordinance says merely that commercial, industrial and institutional premises utilizing the city’s collection service, shall have a fee based on the premises’ waste volume, as determined by cubic yard lengths of containers and number of pick ups per week.
