Council looks at action on consumer fireworks

While most of the public really likes the commercial fireworks displays, there is a divide among people in favor and against consumer fireworks. The Iowa Legislature made the sale and possession of consumer fireworks legal in the state earlier this year. Now it is up to local authorities to regulate where and when those larger consumer fireworks may be discharged. Humboldt Independent photo by Phil Monson.

With the booms and pops from the extended 4th of July celebration still ringing in their ears, the Humboldt City Council on Monday made it clear their intent to restrict the use of consumer fireworks in the community.
The Council has not yet taken official action, but members affirmed the thoughts of Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken, who said he thought the length of time for the discharge of fireworks should be curtailed, a sentiment four Council members present at Monday night’s meeting agreed with.
Councilmen Kirk Whittlesey, Bret Davis, Joel Goodell and Jim Vermeer all weighed in on the matter. Council member John Sleiter was not in attendance.
“I’ve talked to a couple of different Council members and to many citizens as well. My proposal (to the Council) would be to allow discharge just on the 4th and maybe the day either before or after,” Goedken said.
