Curran Jacobs wins Gold in Gotch Catch Wrestling Tournament

Wildcat baseball team comes up short in 3A district opener, 6-3

The Humboldt baseball team put up a good night Friday night in their Class 3A District Tournament game with Webster City, but a 3-run sixth inning by the Lynx helped Webster City pull out a 6-3 victory over the Wildcats.

Humboldt bows out at 18-12 while Webster City (19-4) will face No. 7 ranked Gilbert in a district final Monday night in Gilbert. Gilbert defeated Algona in the late game Friday night.

Devon Clark had two hits to pace the Wildcats. Clark also pitched the first four and one-third innings before giving way to Joey Busse.

The Wildcats' team banquet will be held on Tuesday, July 18, 6 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria.

Kiddie Cats Child Care kickoff

Kiddie Cats Child Care and Learning Center in Dakota City found a shady spot for a fun evening, Tuesday, July 11. The local non-profit set up picnic tables, the Hy-Vee grill, inflatable bounce house and slide and other games for an evening meal and night of fun for supporters of the new Child Care and Learning Center. The group's mission is to provide quality child care in an environment that engages young minds through learning and play. Sande Construction and Supply Co. of Humboldt will be constructing the new 8,000 square foot center that is expected to serve approximately 110 children and their families in the area. The Kiddie Cats Child Care Board has received approval from the USDA for a loan to complete financing on the project. The Board is continuing fund-raising and is still seeking approximately $400,000 to cover construction of the building.

Public input wanted on community visioning

Residents will have the opportunity to share their ideas for improving Humboldt at a design workshop hosted by the Humboldt Visioning Committee at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The workshop is planned for next Wednesday, July 19, and will be open to the public at the Iowa State Extension and Outreach offices at 727 Sumner Ave., from 1-6 p.m.
The workshop is the culmination of an input-gathering process to identify transportation needs and opportunities for enhancements in Humboldt. Information collected at public input gathering events conducted earlier this spring will be incorporated into a conceptual transportation and landscape enhancement plan.
A design team will be working at the Extension office throughout the workshop to develop a conceptual plan that meets the goals and needs of Humboldt. The public is invited to stop by from 1-6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19, to provide input on the designs.

Fair Family Pak drawings, sign up now

The 2017 Humboldt County Fair is fast approaching (July 25-30) and now people have a chance to win a Family Fair Pak for free admission to grandstand events and carnival passes.
The Fair Days Giveaway, sponsored by the Humboldt County Fair Board and Humboldt Newspapers, will give away four Family Paks in drawings on July 14 and two drawings on July 21.
The Family Pak is a $140 value and includes 10 event tickets including: two carnival passes, two tractor pull passes, two chuckwagon race passes, two moto cross passes and two tough truck passes.
People can stop in to register for the drawings at any of the participating businesses. The drawing starts over each week, so keep on registering. There is no purchase required.

The Humboldt/Dakota City Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its new downtown location and the opening of the Humboldt/Dakota City Welcome Center at 627 Sumner Ave.
There will be a special grand opening celebration Friday, July 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to stop in for refreshments, see the new office and welcome center and find out more about Chamber programs and activities.
People can stop by to register to win local prizes and gift cards at the grand opening. They can also sign up for the 2017 Chamber Golf Outing on Friday, Aug. 4, at the Humboldt Country Club.
“The Chamber has noticed a need within the community to get more information about Humboldt County, as well as the what the community has to offer business-wise,” Chamber Director Jenna Mulford said.

Wildcat baseball team tops Cadets, Storm Lake in regular season finale

The Humboldt baseball team ended its regular season in strong fashion Tuesday night (July 11) at home by clubbing 16 hits in a 7-3 victory over the Storm Lake Tornadoes. The victory moved Humboldt's record to 18-11 overall on the season. The Wildcats begin post-season tournament play at Gilbert on Friday, July 14, in a 5 p.m. game with Webster City.

Reese DeWinter, Michael Brightly and Joey Busse each had three hits to lead Humboldt's attack at the plate. Owen Newton earned the win pitching.

Humboldt closed out its North Central Conference schedule on July 10 at Iowa Falls with a 7-2 victory over the Cadets. The victory gave Humboldt an 8-6 record in league play for 2017. Newton led Humboldt's 10-hit attack with two hits while Colby Clarken earned the win pitching with four strikeouts and six hits allowed.
