HUMBOLDT - Humboldt's fourth ranked softball team wasn't to be denied here Monday night (July 10) as the senior-dominated team displayed the poise and precision they've shown all season long by shutting out Southeast Valley, 5-0 in a Class 3A Region 3 Championship game.

The Wildcats, 31-4 on the season, earned the school's fifth state tournament trip, first since 2006, with an impressive performance against the Jaguars (28-6). Freshman pitcher Ellie Jacobson threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks and Humboldt clubbed 10 hits and used its bunting and base running to perfection to cap a storybook season.

The Wildcats will advance into the state tournament next week in Fort Dodge (July 17-21). Humboldt drew a No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 seed Center Point-Urbana (29-10) on Monday, July 17, 7:30 p.m. on Diamond 2 at Rogers Park.

Humboldt and Roland-Story engaged in a knock-down, drag out, 8 inning softball game here Friday night but it was Humboldt which emerged a 6-4 winner over the Norse in a Class 3A Region 3 semifinal round game. The 30-4 Wildcats will host Southeast Valley in a Region 3 championship game on Monday, July 10, 7 p.m. Southeast Valley defeated Cherokee, 11-9 in a semifinal at Cherokee.

Child Care kickoff event is July 11


This is a copy of the sticker that will be given to employees of local businesses who donate $5 to wear jeans on Tuesday, July 11, part of a daylong kickoff to the Kiddie Cat Child Care and Learning Center. There will be a mini-carnival at the site of the center, north of Mease School in Dakota City from 5-8 p.m. that evening. The public is invited to attend.

The community kickoff to the Kiddie Cats Child Care and Learning Center will be held Tuesday, July 11, at the Mease Elementary School grounds with a fun-filled night from 5-8 p.m.
There will be inflatables, face painting, crazy hair and more for just $10 (wristbands provided).
There will be baked goods for sale and HyVee will also be providing a meal to purchase.
In conjunction with the July 11 kickoff, the Kiddie Cats Child Care and Learning Center is interested in having a community-wide business fund-raiser, by having employers allow their employees to wear jeans Tuesday, July 11, for a $5 donation. Employees will be given stickers to show their support. A photo of the sticker is pictured. It incorporates the color scheme of the Kiddie Cat Child Care logo with paw prints and the words “Children are my Business.”

Lots to do and see at 2017 Fair

The 2017 Humboldt County Fair will bring back some of the favorites sprinkled in with some new activities.
Fair dates are July 25-30. Next Generation Shows has expanded the carnival each year and plans to bring even more rides this year.
A pair of candidates will be vying for 2017 Humboldt County Fair Queen, Keagan Burmeister and Kate Curran.
Grandstand entertainment starts with harness racing on Tuesday night, Fair Queen coronation, Little Miss and Mister and 4-H Fashion Review on Wednesday night, The Sound Exchange a cappella group performing on Thursday night, the Lucas Oil Tractor and Pickup Pull on Friday night, Chuckwagon races on Saturday night followed by entertainment by the band “Farm Rock,” motocross races Sunday morning and the popular Tough Truck competition on Sunday night.
There is no charge for grandstand events Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Humboldt softball team tops Gilbert in 3A Region 3 opener, 6-1

The fourth-ranked Humboldt softball team opened post-season tournament play at home Wednesday night (July 5) and earned a 6-1 victory over the Gilbert Tigers. Humboldt, now 29-4 on the season, collected eight hits at the plate and got a four-hit pitching performance from Ellie Jacobson, who recorded seven strikeouts. Avery Terwilliger made three hits and Carlie Thompson and Beth Duffield each had two for the Wildcats, who will host a semifinal round game on Friday, July 7, against Roland-Story, a 9-1 winner over South Hardin.
