Western Edge celebrates 50 years at the fair

This year Western Edge Ltd., of Humboldt and Ames will mark 50 years exhibiting Western wear and horse supplies at the Iowa State Fair.

The year 2017 establishes a landmark year for 50 years of exhibiting Western wear and horse supplies at the Iowa State Fair for Melanie Edge, president of the Western Edge Ltd., of Humboldt and Ames.
A memorable early moment for Melanie Edge was selling 60 cowboy hats to a delegation of Japanese that visited the Iowa State Fair. “They looked so cute walking down the street with their bobbing up and down white cowboy hats.”
Melanie Edge will say that “Nothing does compare to the Iowa State Fair.” The Western Edge is on the road with their booths 175 days out of the year from Minnesota, Colorado, Texas, Wisconsin, to Nevada. But, by far the Iowa State Fair is the biggest and their favorite of all shows.

Witzke excited about 2nd year at DMACC

CHRIS WITZKE

Usually the first year of college is about young adults finding themselves.
Former Humboldt High all-state baseball player Chris Witzke has appeared to have found a new home at Des Moines Area Community College in Boone.
A year ago Witzke, a 2016 HHS graduate, headed off to the University of Illinois at Springfield, where he joined the NCAA Division II program. But after the first semester, Witzke opted to transfer back to Iowa and play for the DMACC Bears. Witzke made a significant contribution this past season and is now looking forward to his second year with the junior college program.
“It was tough leaving UIS, but I got a really good deal financially over at DMACC. I decided over the long term I would be saving some money by starting out at DMACC. I would also have a chance to have a different role at DMACC than I did at Springfield,” Witzke said. “I felt like I could have a better impact at DMACC.”

Larson begins final year at ISU on 2-deep roster at guard

Humboldt's Bryan Larson is battling for playing time in the offensive line for the Iowa State football team as he enters his fifth and final year with the Cyclones. Independent photo by Phil Monson.

Humboldt’s Bryan Larson stood at midfield inside the Bergstrom indoor practice field on the Iowa State University campus in Ames on Aug. 3 and soaked in the atmosphere.
It was media day for the Cyclone football team and Larson looked every bit like a confident, fifth-year senior.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Larson enters his final year with the Cyclones after having earned a scholarship prior to the start of the spring semester last January. Not only is he on scholarship, he’s listed on the two-deep depth chart for the Cyclones, listed as No. 2 at left guard behind senior Robby Garcia.
Not bad for a young guy who earned a spot on the team as a regular walk-on on the first day of school in 2013 and paid his dues. If the 2017 season unfolds like Larson is hoping, he could become one of many hard-working success stories for the Cyclones, who look to improve from last year’s 3-9 record.
