Greg, Drew Thomas look back on Shrine Bowl experience

Humboldt football coach Greg Thomas keeps an eye on a young quarterback during last week's Humboldt Football Camp. Greg and Drew Thomas recently participated in the Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game. Independent photo by Phil Monson.

Wearing his blue-colored Humboldt football helmet one last time, Drew Thomas made the most of it playing in the 45th annual Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game on July 29 in Cedar Falls.
Thomas played quarterback in the first and third quarters for the North squad and helped his teammates to a 30-13 victory over the South in the annual contest, which raises funds for Shriners hospitals around the United States.
Thomas rushed for 54 yards and completed nine of 15 passes with one touchdown (55-yards) and one interception.
“It was just an amazing experience. I felt really blessed to be able to be a part of that game. It is for a great cause, raising money for the kids in Shriners hospitals. I got to meet a lot of awesome guys…a couple future teammates and a couple future opponents,” Drew said. “It was a really good time.”
“It was fun to get the pads back on. It is time for football again,” Drew said.

Witzke excited about 2nd year at DMACC

Chris Witzke

Usually the first year of college is about young adults finding themselves.
Former Humboldt High all-state baseball player Chris Witzke has appeared to have found a new home at Des Moines Area Community College in Boone.
A year ago Witzke, a 2016 HHS graduate, headed off to the University of Illinois at Springfield, where he joined the NCAA Division II program. But after the first semester, Witzke opted to transfer back to Iowa and play for the DMACC Bears. Witzke made a significant contribution this past season and is now looking forward to his second year with the junior college program.
“It was tough leaving UIS, but I got a really good deal financially over at DMACC. I decided over the long term I would be saving some money by starting out at DMACC. I would also have a chance to have a different role at DMACC than I did at Springfield,” Witzke said. “I felt like I could have a better impact at DMACC.”
