HHS girls win Spencer tournament

The Humboldt volleyball team improved to 12-3 overall on the season by winning the Spencer tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9. The Wildcats defeated Cherokee (2-0), Algona (2-0) and Carroll (2-1) with their only loss on the day to Spencer (2-0).

Humboldt opened North Central Conference play with an impressive, 3-0 sweep of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Sept. 7 in the Humboldt gym.

The Wildcats, now 9-2 overall on the season, 1-0 in NCC play, defeated the Cowgirls by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-20.

HHS will host Hampton on Tuesday, Sept. 12, and visit Webster City on Sept. 14. They play in the Carroll Invitational on Sept. 16.

Hardpack 30 bike ride is September 23


Panoramic vistas of the Des Moines River and surrounding countryside are available on the Hardpack 30 bike ride Saturday, Sept. 23, from Rutland to Rolfe and back along the Three Rivers Trail. There is still time to sign up and the cost is $30 with proceeds going to trail improvements in Humboldt and Pocahontas counties. People can register at www.hardpack30.com.

The sixth annual Humboldt County Hardpack 30 bicycle ride on the Three Rivers Trail will be Saturday, Sept. 23, starting at 9:30 a.m. at Rutland. Riders will pedal from Rutland to Rolfe, a distance of about 13.5 miles. And then they’ll return to Rutland (27 miles round trip).
Entry fee is $30, which includes a long sleeved t-shirt designed by Hardpack 30 organizer Jake Zweibohmer. This year, the first 100 to register for the Hardpack 30 will receive custom designed Hardpack 30 bandanas, a $10 value, for free. There will also be some other giveaways included when people pick up their shirts before the ride.
Online registration is available this year at www.hardpack30.com, a website created by Bri Berte.
Profits from the ride go towards trail improvements. More than $7,000 has been raised and donated to Humboldt County Conservation and Pocahontas County Conservation over the first five rides.

Work under way on new recreation center


This is the architect’s drawing of how the Humboldt Recreation Center will look. The Ken and Marilyn Nielsen family is building the facility along Wildcat Road across the from the high school and donating it to the city of Humboldt. The public can view more information about the project at RVTV in downtown Humboldt today (Thursday, Sept. 7), from 3-6 p.m.

Dirt work is under way and plans are on place for the new Humboldt Recreation Center along Wildcat Road across from Humboldt High School and Middle School.
The Humboldt Recreation Center is being built by the Ken and Marilyn Nielsen family. Upon completion, the Nielsen family will donate the facility to the city of Humboldt.
The 70,000 square foot facility will be called the Humboldt Recreation Center (HRC) and the gym/track area will be named the Ken and Marilyn Nielsen Family Fieldhouse.
Sande Construction of Humboldt is the general contractor on the project, which has a target completion date of Dec. 31, 2018.

Wildcat runners sweep team titles at Estherville

The Humboldt cross country teams swept the ELC Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The Wildcat girls, led by overall winner Bryce Gidel (19:45), totaled 39 points to surpass runner up Spencer at 54. Gabby Kent was fourth.

Humboldt's boys, who scored 40 to outdistance Spirit Lake (65), were led by runner up Joe Kunert (17:23) and third place finisher Quint on Orr (17:25).

HHS volleyball team goes to 8-2

The Humboldt volleyball team improved its season record to 8-2 overall Tuesday night by stopping Manson-NW and Storm Lake. Humboldt defeated Manson-NW 21-15, 21-17 and Storm Lake 21-15 and 21-21.
The Wildcats return to action at home on Thursday, Sept. 7, when they host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

Wildcats hold off Bulldogs, 34-20

Joey Busse threw five touchdown passes and Jamison Heinz was the recipient four of those to lead the Humboldt football team past Hampton-Dumont, 34-20 Friday night (Sept. 1) in Hampton in non-district high school football.

Eli Sande also had a touchdown pass catch for Humboldt, which won its first game of the season and will take a 1-1 record into their Class 3A District One opener at home on Sept. 8 against Spencer.
