Wildcats win overtime thriller over LeMars, 29-22

Tyler Vitzthum scored on a one-yard touchdown run in overtime to lift the Humboldt Wildcat football team to a thrilling, 29-22 victory over LeMars Friday night (Oct. 20) in a Class 3A District One contest in Humboldt. Humboldt, which had the ball first in overtime, stopped the Bulldogs on four tries to hold on for its incredible comeback in which the Wildcats trailed 22-0 at halftime. Humboldt sent the game into overtime when Jamison Heinz teamed up with Eli Sande on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left in regulation. Heinz then passed to Sawyer Savery for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 22-22.

The victory, in a regular season finale for both teams, gives Humboldt an overall record of 3-6, 2-5 in district play. LeMars finishes 1-8 overall, 1-6 in district play.

BREAKING NEWS: Algona man, D.C. woman arrested after crash

The red Chevrolet Impala in the above photo led Humboldt County Law Enforcement on a brief high-speed chase through the city streets of Humboldt shortly after 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, Oct. 20. Eric Humphrey, 33, of Algona, and Jacey Vodraska, 18, of Dakota City, were apprehended after their vehicle crashed into three other vehicles. No one was seriously hurt. An Algona man in a red Chevrolet Impala led Humboldt Police, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol on a brief but intense high-speed chase in the town of Humboldt Friday afternoon, shortly after 3:30 p.m.
At approximately 3:35 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff's Deputy Cory Lampe observed the Chevrolet Impala at the Hardee's drive-thru in Humboldt. He recognized the driver of the vehicle to be Eric Humphrey, 33, of Algona, and knew there was a warrant for his arrest in Kossuth County. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle at Hardee's, the driver in the vehicle fled, leading authorities on a high-speed chase in the community.

Humboldt girls advance to state cross country!

The Humboldt girls' cross country qualified for the state championships after winning the team title in a qualifying meet at Spencer on Oct. 19. Led by Bryce Gidel's first-place individual finish, the Humboldt High girls' cross country team earned another trip to the state championships after winning the team title in a state-qualifying meet in Spencer on Thursday, Oct. 19.

The Wildcats, who have won the team title in every meet they've competed in for the 2017 season, totaled 57 points to claim the top spot. Spencer was second at 79 and Bishop Heelan Catholic of Sioux City was third with 85 points. The top three teams advance to the state meet, along with the top 15 individual runners.

Gidel finished first in 19:16.34 while teammate Gabby Kent ran third in 19:59.32. Isabella Luu was 11th in 20:24.89 and Lauren Erickson ran 19th in 21:07.94. Elizabeth Hildreth was 23rd while Madeleine Ruzicka was 30th and Kallie Nilles ran 37th to round out Humboldt's lineup for the day.

Hog Slat expands product offerings

It would be safe to say that the modern swine and poultry industries would not exist today if not for the existence of industry partners like Hog Slat and Georgia Poultry.
Hog Slat, a leading manufacturer of precast concrete slats and swine production equipment, has its roots in rural North Carolina.
In 1993 Humboldt was selected as the headquarters for the Midwest Division.
The local industry’s latest addition is a 106,000 square foot warehouse located northeast of the main office, which was completed in 2016. The new building allowed the Midwest Division in Humboldt to more than double its bulk storage and warehousing capabilities. There is also room for light manufacturing and assembly of products. Right now, Hog Slat is manufacturing the steel mats for concrete slats it also produces. About 85 percent of the new building is dedicated to warehouse activities and about 15 percent to manufacturing.

AmericInn grand opening is Oct. 25

Humboldt’s new 41-room hotel, AmericInn, will have a Grand Opening on Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 3-5:30 p.m.
The two-story hotel is located on Highway 169 at the intersection with 3rd Avenue North in Humboldt. The new business currently employs 13 people. General Manager Jason Brownfield said business has been very good since the “soft” opening on July 20.
“We’ve had very good occupancy rates and have been sold out several nights. We are getting lots of positive comments about the hotel,” Brownfield said. “The Grand Opening gives people a chance to come see the hotel, the rooms and the pool.”
Work on the pool was set to be completed this week.
“We wanted to wait until the pool was finished to have the Grand Opening. We haven’t set any prices or times yet, but we will be doing open swim and pool parties.
