Thomas retiring as Humboldt football coach

Greg Thomas, who had guided the Humboldt High School football team for the past 18 seasons, has announced he is stepping down from his position.
His departure as head coach is contingent upon action by the Humboldt School board at their regular monthly meeting on Nov. 20. He will remain as athletic director and assistant principal at Humboldt.
Thomas came to Humboldt in 2000 after an eight-year run at Galva-Holstein, where he went 44-24. Thomas has compiled a won-loss record of 79-93 during his time in Humboldt, which includes a state championship in 2006 and six state playoff appearances, along with three district championships.
Last summer, Thomas served as head coach of the North Squad in the annual North-South Shrine Bowl All-Star game.

BREAKING NEWS: Jacobson out as county engineer


Humboldt County Engineer Paul Jacobson was told Thursday afternoon that he no longer will be employed by the county after Jan. 1, 2018. Jacobson has served the county in that capacity since the beginning of the century, 17.75 years. The vote was 4-1 in favor of not renewing Jacobson's contract.

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors on Thursday (Nov. 9) agreed not to renew County Engineer Paul Jacobson’s contract beyond Jan. 1, 2018.
Jacobson has served as the county engineer since March 20, 2000.
During a meeting of the Board last April, it was agreed to give Jacobson a six-month contract without a pay raise. His salary for the current fiscal year is $103,000, plus benefits. The Board agreed to review Jacobson's performance after six months.
Last April, the Board said Jacobson needed to improve his communication with the public and the Board. The Board also said Jacobson’s leadership, discipline and management skills could be improved.

New mayors in Renwick and Dakota City

The towns of Renwick and Dakota City have new mayors for 2018, while some familiar faces reclaimed seats on city councils in area towns following Tuesday's municipal elections around the area.
Bode had a record 10 candidates for five seats on the city council. D.L. Peterson was the top vote-getter with 59, followed by Mark Dale, Robert “Bud” Douglas, Jess Tepner and Roger B. Rongved Sr., all being elected. Rongved and Tepner served on the city council in previous years. Royden Miller was elected mayor.
In Renwick, write-in candidate Taylor Kunert was elected mayor, according to the unofficial totals. There were a total of 62 write-in votes for mayor, with declared candidate Rick Larson receiving 23.
For city council, there were six candidates for three seats.

Misty Harbor to return to Humboldt


The former Born Free Motorcoach building at 1505 13th St. N. has been purchased by Marine Group LLC, doing business as Misty Harbor. The company plans to immediately start hiring employees for Humboldt operations, with an expected 40 people hired by the end of the first year. The company manufactures pontoon boats and accessories and has its beginnings in Humboldt, started by the Harklau family. Humboldt Independent photo.

Misty Harbor Pontoons will be returning to its roots in a sense, as the company will be beginning manufacturing operations in the former Dodgen Born Free Motorcoach factory on Highway 169, it was announced at the conclusion of Monday night’s Humboldt City Council meeting.

8 Wildcats named to 3A-1 all-district football team

The Humboldt High football team has eight players selected to the coaches' all-district team in Class 3A District One. Their selections were announced by Wildcat head coach Greg Thomas at the team's potluck dinner banquet on Nov. 6.

First-team picks for the Wildcats include junior running back Tyler Vitzthum, sophomore wide receiver Jamison Heinz, junior defensive end Jack Arndt and junior defensive tackle Owen Terwilliger. Honorable mention selections include senior linebacker Hunter Egdorf, junior defensive tackle Justin Jones, junior offensive lineman Owen Newton and junior safety Sawyer Savery.
