Humboldt boys tumble at Clarion, 77-61

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows finished the first half with a 10-1 run and went on to down Humboldt, 77-61 in a boys' North Central Conference basketball game in Clarion Friday night (Feb. 2). Calvin Carlson scored 14 points to lead the Wildcats, who fell to 6-11 overall, 5-7 in the NCC. Sam Urness scored 23 to pace the Cowboys.

WILDCAT BOYS IN 57-28 VICTORY OVER BULLDOGS
Humboldt's varsity boys' basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak by running past Hampton-Dumont, 57-28 Tuesday night (Jan. 30) in Hampton. Calvin Carlson scored 16 points, Hudson Gargano made 10 and Jacob Thurm had eight to pace the Wildcats, who also defeated the Bulldogs at home back on Dec. 19. The victory improved Humboldt to 6-10 overall, 5-6 in the North Central Conference.

The Wildcats will visit Iowa Falls on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and host Algona on Friday, Feb. 9.

Wildcat girls in 37-25 loss at Clarion

Humboldt’s varsity girls basketball team came up on the short end of a 37-25 final score in Clarion Friday night, Feb. 2. Jori Hajek scored 9 points to lead Humboldt, which fell to 5-14 overall, 4-9 in conference play.

WILDCATS IN 49-43 LOSS AT HAMPTON
Hampton-Dumont avenged an early season loss to Humboldt by posting a 49-43 victory over the Wildcats Tuesday night (Jan. 30) in Hampton. The Bulldogs had lost 49-36 to Humboldt back on Dec. 19. Humboldt was led in scoring by Sydney Lane with 10 points and Cassie Peyton and Jori Hajek each with eight. Humboldt falls to 5-13 overall, 4-8 in the North Central Conference.

Humboldt will travel to Iowa Falls on Feb. 6 before returning home on Feb. 8 to host Belmond-Klemme in their final regular season home game. The Wildcats begin post-season tournament play at Algona on Saturday, Feb. 10, against Algona in a first round Region 2 contest which will begin at 7 p.m.

Clear Lake sweeps Humboldt girls/boys

Conference power Clear Lake swept Humboldt in a pair of NCC games Friday night in Humboldt. The visiting Lions rolled to a 54-24 victory over Humboldt in the girls game and 80-49 over Humboldt in the boys game. Sydney Lane scored 10 points to pace the Wildcat girls, 5-12 overall, 4-7 in the NCC. Jamison Heinz made 18 and Calvin Carlson 13 to lead the Wildcat boys, 5-10 overall, 3-7 in the NCC.

The Wildcats return to action at Hampton on Jan. 30.

Wrestlers go 2-1 in regular season finale

The Humboldt wrestling team ended their regular season Thursday night (Jan. 25) at Ballard Huxley by going 2-1 in a non-conference quad. Humboldt whipped Perry (53-24), and Greene County (52-30) and fell to No. 4 ranked Ballard (41-29).

Humboldt ends its regular season at 22-7 overall. The Wildcats will now prepare for their Class 2A Sectional Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the Humboldt gym. Action begins at 12 noon.

Humboldt girls will face Algona in regional opener

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released post-season tournament pairings today for Class 3A and Humboldt has been assigned to a Region 2 first round game with Algona on Saturday, Feb. 10, 7 p.m. in Algona. The winner will play Forest City or Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, who meet in another first round game in Forest City. The other half of Region 2 has Clear Lake hosting Garner-Hayfield/Ventura and Iowa Falls-Alden hosting Hampton-Dumont. Semifinal round games are slated for Feb. 14 at Forest City and Clear Lake, respectively. The 3A Region 2 championship will be played in Garner on Saturday, Feb. 17, 7 p.m.
