Humboldt football fans who traveled to the northwest corner of Iowa the last two years will be driving the opposite direction in 2018 and 2019 after the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced district football assignments and classification on Jan. 25.
Humboldt will compete in Class 3A District 2 with Webster City, Dallas Center-Grimes, Boone, Perry and Carroll. The full nine-game schedule will be announced in mid-February.
The IHSAA opted to remain with a 16-team playoff format per class, keeping the Friday night football game slate all the way through the playoffs.
One of the biggest changes is the implementation of the Ratings Percentage Index formula (RPI). Only the district champ or teams tying for a district title will receive automatic qualification. The RPI will be used to determine the remaining at-large playoff qualifiers. All nine games will count toward the playoffs and the 17-point tie-breaker for margin of victory will be dropped.
