Humboldt native and Iowa State University student Andrew Bonde has gotten a lot of mileage out of his membership on the school’s solar car team.
Bonde, a senior at ISU majoring in Mechanical Engineering, was part of 15 team members on PrISUm, to travel to Australia last October and spend five weeks, which included racing in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge.
The 1,877-mile, biennial race began on Oct. 8 in northern Australia, in Darwin, and finished Oct. 15 in southern Australia, in Adelaide.
“It was a really awesome experience. It was my first time leaving the United States and we went quite a ways away for that matter,” Bonde said. “Australia itself is a really neat environment. They kind of have that ‘Midwest-level’ of friendliness over there. The people were nice.”

Ross looks back on bowl victory, another year of growth at Iowa

BRADY ROSS

By Phil Monson
A 27-20 victory over Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl in New York last week was just what Brady Ross and the Iowa Hawkeye football team needed.
The victory capped an up-and-down, 8-5 season for the Hawkeyes. 2017 had its frustrating and exhilarating moments.
Ross, a 2015 Humboldt High School graduate, finished his third year at Iowa, where he evenly split time at fullback with senior starter Drake Kulick. Ross also played on special teams on kickoffs and kick returns.
The victory snapped a five-game post-season losing streak for the Hawks and sent Ross and his teammates into the off-season with optimism.
“The Pinstripe Bowl was a great experience from the moment we arrived in New York. The Yankees are the class organization in the world of sports. They certainly lived up to that. It was a very fun trip in that regard,” Ross said.

Wickett enjoys return to football

MASON WICKETT

Mason Wickett loved his return to the football field last fall.
Wickett, a 2016 Humboldt High School graduate and sophomore at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, joined the Beaver football team in 2017 after transferring in from Iowa State University, where he took a year off from athletics.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end made an impact right away at BVU as he came off the bench and saw extensive action in a reserve role on the defensive line.
Wickett played in all 10 games for the Beavers as he recorded 25 tackles and had one quarterback sack.
“It feels really awesome to be at Buena Vista. After transferring here from Iowa State, I feel like I’m a part of something that’s bigger than myself. I like being around teammates and the camaraderie that goes with it,” Wickett said.
