Pet registration is due March 1

The pet license tags being sold by the city of Humboldt are shown above. The back has a QR code that people can scan, or an 855 toll-free number to call to reveal information about the pet’s owner. Tags are $5 for unsexed dogs and cats and $10 for sexed animals. Pet owners from Dakota City or outside the Humboldt city limits can purchase the tags too. Humboldt animal control will have the information on file, as will Humboldt Police and Humboldt City Hall. Humboldt Independent photos by Kent Thompson.

Humboldt residents are reminded that March 1 is the date to have your pet licensed and registered with the city of Humboldt.
For a small fee, dogs and cats within the city limits can be registered. If the animal is found running loose, the owner can easily be identified.
New this year is a colorful Humboldt, Iowa Pet License tag on the front. The back of the tag includes a QR code that people can scan with their mobile device and information about the owner of the animal will appear. There is also a 855 toll-free number to call for a person without a phone on them or scanner capability. There is also a serial number for the pet on the back of the tag and the person finding the pet can call the number 24/7 and get information about the pet’s owner.

NY fire chief survives 911 and tells Humboldt

By Jeff Gargano
More than 1,200 people filled the Humboldt High School gym on Sunday afternoon to hear Richard Picciotto, the highest ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse on Sept. 11, 2001.
The Humboldt Fire Department and Executive Functions Management (EFM) of Humboldt organized the event, which served as a fundraiser for the fire department as they raise money to replace the aging air cascade system the fire department uses to fill air packs.
During the event, which featured performances by the Humboldt Community Chorus, a check for $26,455 was presented to Humboldt Fire Chief Jim Gronbach and members of the department.
“I made the decision to evacuate the north tower,” Picciotto said. “It was a tough order to give because there were people trapped above who would have no chance without the help of firefighters.”
Picciotto was asked what he learned from the experience.
