Humboldt boys fall at Waverly in 3A district opener

The Humboldt boys basketball team ended their season Tuesday night (Feb. 20) in a Class 3A District Tournament game at Waverly-Shell Rock in first round play, falling 74-44 to the Go-Hawks. Calvin Carlson scored 19 points to pace Humboldt.

Humboldt finishes with a 7-15 record while the Go-Hawks move to 16-6. WSR will host Crestwood in a district final on Thursday, Feb. 22. Crestwood advanced with a double overtime win over Clear Lake in Tuesday’s first game.

In the other half of the substate, Charles City defeated Iowa Falls-Alden and Webster City edged Decorah. Charles City and Webster City meet in a district final in Charles City on Feb. 22. The substate final game will be played on Monday, Feb. 26, in Mason City.

Busse earns 6th place medal in state wrestling!

Humboldt's Joey Busse earned a sixth-place medal at 145 pounds in the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Busse, 45-7, who entered the tournament ranked No. 9, went 0-2 on the day on Saturday in the consolation finals. Busse lost 10-2 to Tanner Abbas and was pinned by Klayton Keller of Saydel in his two bouts on Saturday.

Busse guaranteed himself of winning a medal by stopping Eric Campie of Comanche, 4-1, in the Friday morning consolation wrestle back round. Earlier in the day in the quarterfinals, Busse lost a hard-fought, 4-2 decision to Saydel's Klayton Keller.
Busse came back in the Friday afternoon session and defeated Colton Vest of South Tama, 11-8.

Johnson ends career in state wrestling tournament

Humboldt High senior Brandon Johnson wrapped up his wrestling career competing in the Class 2A State Wrestling Championships on day one inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Thursday, Feb. 15.

Johnson, competing at 220 pounds, went 0-2 on the day to end up getting eliminated from the tournament. In his opening round match he lost by fall 2:19 to No. 3 ranked Tyler Anderson of Odebolt-Arthur-Battle Creek/Ida Grove. In the consolation wrestle back, Johnson battled Monticello's Lake Sahlberg before falling 5-2.

Hasenkamp to step down after 31 years

Twin Rivers Elementary School Principal Don Hasenkamp announced that he will be taking early retirement at the end of the current school year. Hasenkamp has been with the district for the past 31 years.

Twin Rivers Elementary School Principal Don Hasenkamp is retiring at the end of the current school year.
Hasenkamp, who has been with the district for 31 years, submitted his early retirement application to the Twin Rivers School Board last week, which accepted his resignation at their regular monthly meeting on Feb. 8.
Twin Rivers School Superintendent Greg Darling and the board thanked Hasenkamp for his many years of leadership and commitment to the district and community.
“The district is very proud of the leadership Don has provided for many years,” Darling said. “He arrived here with his family and became a part of the community. He provided stability and consistency to the district. He will be missed.”
“I’m sad to be leaving a place that has meant so much to me. After teaching for nine years in Nebraska, Twin Rivers was my first and last administrative position,” Hasenkamp told the Independent.

Favorite Sons

A new 10-minute video created by Tom Kroeschell of Iowa State University traces the roots of wrestling’s popularity to Humboldt.
Kroeschell, who is Director of Programming for Cyclones.tv, entitled the video, “Favorite Sons.” Starting out with Iowa State’s hire of Humboldt native Kevin Dresser as head wrestling coach, the video progresses to talk about Humboldt’s Frank Gotch. There is also a segment on Humboldt’s Bruce Reimers, star offensive lineman for the Cyclones who played 10 years in the NFL and also wrestled with Dresser in high school.
“I don’t work for the Humboldt-Dakota City Chamber of Commerce but I can easily affirm the positive small town qualities of Humboldt, and the advantages people gain from growing up in a small town environment,” Kroeschell said. “Small town fabric is what makes Iowa such a great place to raise a family.”
