The city of Humboldt has advised that an Emergency Snow Ordinance has been issued, effective at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8. There will be no on street parking except for Sumner Avenue from 4th Street to 8th Street. All vehicles should be removed from city residential streets by 3 p.m. or face being ticketed for a civil penalty, or possibly towed. Snowfall rates will be moderate to heavy at times. Northerly winds are expected to increase Thursday night into Friday, creating areas of blowing and drifting snow, especially in rural, open areas.

Good food, friendly atmosphere at Cinco de Mayo

Israel Lezama wants people to enjoy their meals and have a good time when they visit Cinco de Mayo, one of the community’s newest restaurants.
The Mexican restaurant is located at 1208 4th Ave. SW, site of the former Beach House restaurant, right next to the Humboldt County Farm Bureau office.
Lezama said the concept of running a good Tex-Mex restaurant, or any restaurant for that matter, is pretty simple.
“Keep the customer happy. The first goal is to please the customer. If you do that, they will leave happy and come back. If they are happy, they will tell others and that’s how you build the business,” Lezama said.
“Our concept is fresh and tasty food, cleanliness and a nice, friendly environment. When you put them all together, that’s a formula for success,” the owner said.
Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

You’ve probably heard a lot of restaurants claim they have food “just like mother used to make.”
In the case of Humboldt’s Joe Alvarez, it’s a verifiable fact. If you don’t believe Joe, just ask his mother, Cleo Alvarez.
You see, Joe is using many of his mother’s and his family’s recipes in his new Tex Mex restaurant, Burrito Mexpress.
Located on Highway 3, east of Larry’s Pharmacy in the former North Central Iowa Service building, Alvarez promises good home cooked recipes with fresh ingredients.
The restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Read more about it in this week's Humboldt Independent. Subscribe today by clicking on the link at the top of this page and read all of what you are missing.

Iowa Central bond issue passes

A $25.5 million bond issue for Iowa Central Community College passed in the nine-county region with 67.5 percent approval. The measure will allow the construction of a student success center on campus to house enrollment, financial aid, academic counseling and other career planning services. Improvements to several other buildings and increased career academies district-wide, as well as security and electrical upgrades are also part of the issue.

The $25.5 million general obligation bond issue sought by Iowa Central Community College passed Tuesday, district-wide by 67.5 percent and in Humboldt County by 64 percent.
The measure needed 60 percent or greater approval among the nine-county region to pass.
According to unofficial votes tabulated by the Humboldt County Auditor’s Office, in Humboldt County the measure passed 223 in favor to 124 opposed, a 64 percent approval rating. A December 2016 $29.5 million bond issue failed. In that election, 96 Humboldt County voters voted in favor with 130 opposed.
“We did a much better job getting the word out there this time,” Iowa Central President Dan Kinney said, thanking the public for supporting the bond issue.
“This will prepare Iowa Central to serve the growth and future of the region,” he said.
