HHS girls 2nd in golf meets

The Humboldt varsity girls' golf team finished second in a pair of meets over the weekend.

Humboldt was runner-up to Clear Lake in a three-team meet at Clear Lake on Friday, April 27. The Wildcats were also second in an eight team meet in Clarion on April 28. Clear Lake also edged Humboldt in Saturday's meet, 393-404. Frances Carlson shot a 91 to finish third overall in leading Humboldt. Kelly Boleyn was fourth with a 93.

Humboldt track teams win titles at Eagle Grove

The Humboldt High School girl/boy track teams kept up their winning ways by taking first in the team scoring of the Eagle Grove Relays on Saturday, April 28.

The Wildcat girls were paced by Bryce Gidel, who won both the 1,500 (5:15.51) and 3,000 (10:45.35) meters races. Lily Groat won the 200 meters (29.25), Gabby Kent won the 800 (2:34.83), Jori Hajek won the 100 meter hurdles (17.16) and Trinity Helmer took the high jump (4-10). Humboldt also won the 4x200, 4x400, sprint medley and distance medley relay races.

The Humboldt boys won seven individual events to finish first. Tyler Vitzthum won the 200 meters (24.94), Denny Pederson won the 400 meters (50.92), Noah Helmer won the 800 meters (2:13.09), Joseph Kunert won the 1,600 meters (4:50.18), Quinton Orr won the 3,200 meters (10:02.33), Sawyer Savery won the 400 meter hurdles (59.62) and Matt Miller won the long jump (19-6). Humboldt also won the 4x100 and sprint medley relays.

Wildcat soccer teams post shutout victories

The Humboldt High girls' and boys' soccer teams picked up a pair of shutout victories on April 26.

The Humboldt boys improved to 2-3 on the season with a 2-0 shutout victory over Mason City in Humboldt. The Humboldt girls blanked Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, 1-0 the same night in Garner.

Humboldt boys 1st, girls 2nd in Storm Lake Relays

Humboldt's boys claimed the team title while the Wildcat girls were runners-up in the Storm Lake Invitational Track and Field meet held on April 26 in Storm Lake.

The Wildcat girls won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:13.00 and were second and third in numerous other events. The Humboldt boys won nine events and won the team title by 60 points over the runner-up finisher.

Habitat holds groundbreaking, volunteers needed

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Sunday afternoon for a family who will have a new home later this summer or early fall.
Twin Rivers Habitat for Humanity is building a home at 211 1st Avenue South in Humboldt (southeast of the Humboldt Family Aquatic Center). The homeowner will be Tracy Monson and her family.
Howard Hartman, Executive Director of Twin Rivers Habitat for Humanity introduced Tracy and her children, Colton, Karson and MaKinley. He also introduced several people in attendance including State Representative Mike Sexton, Humboldt Mayor Dan Scholl as well as several board members of Twin Rivers Habitat for Humanity.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, there was a fundraiser pasta dinner served at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

Supervisors OK wind ordinance


No one knows if wind turbines will spring up in Humboldt County, but the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors are moving closer to having an ordinance in place to regulate commercial wind farms if they do come. Read about it in this week's Humboldt Independent.

More than six months in the making, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors on Monday approved language changes in a commercial/utility grade wind tower ordinance and agreed to have the first reading of the ordinance at its Monday, May 7 meeting.
Citizens who would like to read the full 7.5-page ordinance are encouraged to do so. They may obtain a copy by contacting the Humboldt County Auditor’s Office on the main floor of the Humboldt County Courthouse, 203 Main St., Dakota City. People can also view the ordinance online at www.humboldtcountyia.org.
Applications for permits are to be filed with the Humboldt County zoning administrator, who will have 30 days to review the application and provide comment.
