County Road C-49 to be closed for paving

An 11-mile stretch of County Road C-49 in the southern portion of the county will be closed for one week beginning Monday, April 16 (weather permitting). The Humboldt County Engineer's Office will let the public know when the road is reopened.

County Road C-49 (270th Street) from Highway 169 west to County Road P-19 at the Humboldt/Pocahontas county line, is expected to be closed for one week, beginning on Monday, April 16, Humboldt County Interim Engineer Ben Loots reported this week. The purpose of the closing is for an 11-mile road resurfacing project to be conducted by Manatt's Inc. of Brooklyn. The $2.42 million project will include five inches of PCC resurfacing. The road work also includes structure work, aprons, concrete culverts and piping, making the actual paving cost about $215,000 per mile. There will be access and egress to properties during construction. The contractor will let residents know if they will need to park on a north/south intersecting road to have an exit during road work around their homes. Paving is weather dependent. The road is expected to be closed for about one week's time. People with questions may contact the Humboldt County Engineer's office at (515) 332-2366.

Like many of Humboldt’s industries that started small, Bailey Fabricating continues to grow and thrive with a recent expansion into a new 7,900 square foot facility in Humboldt’s Northwest Industrial Park.
Bailey Fabricating constructs food grade pallet racking, kayak trailers, after market parts and a lot of specialty welding for local manufacturers. Owner-operator Randy Bailey added a brake press, laser cutter and CNC router with the expansion to help expand his customer base and his capabilities.
Bailey worked for six years at The Chantland Company, and then went to work at Humboldt Controls and Fabricating, working there until Voyager Industries bought them out. The last five years he was the General Manager. When Voyager closed their Humboldt plant, Randy started Bailey Fabricating.

HCMH breaks ground on 40,000-square foot expansion

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) got out the shovels on Tuesday, April 3, not to shovel snow, although there was a measurable amount of that. The occasion was the public groundbreaking for the $16.9 million expansion project at HCMH, which kicked off last week and is expected to take 19 months. Humboldt Independent photo by Kent Thompson.

Forty-eight years ago, sod was turned for a community hospital for the city of Humboldt and the surrounding area.
On April 3, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) Board of Trustee President Scott Curran used the same shovel to turn soil on a new chapter in the hospital’s history.
The new chapter will be the construction of a two-story, 40,000-square foot addition, that will provide additional space for primary care medical providers through the relocation of UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine - Humboldt inside the hospital, as well as expansion of outpatient services, rehabilitation services, cardiopulmonary services, diabetic education, dietary support, patient education area and a new conference center that will double the space of the existing center.
“Planning for this began in early 2015, about when I arrived at the hospital,” HCMH Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michelle Sleiter said.
