Wildcat baseball team off to 2-0 start

The Humboldt High baseball team is off to a 2-0 start to their season after posting victories over East Sac County (9-6) on May 22 at home and on May 24 at Cherokee (10-2).

An eight-run fifth inning broke the game open for Humboldt in their victory over the Braves of Cherokee.

A four-run fourth inning and Colby Clarken's four-hit pitching led Humboldt in their victory over East Sac. Humboldt produced nine hits at bat as Joey Busse, Owen Newton and Reese DeWinter each had two hits to pace the Wildcats.

Humboldt will play at Ogden on Friday, May 25. The Wildcats will play in the Remsen tournament on Saturday, May 26. Humboldt is at Fort Dodge St. Edmond on May 30 in their North Central Conference opener.

School purchases Chromebooks for grades 5-9

The Humboldt School District will purchase 275 new computer Chromebooks for the 2018-19 school year.
The purchase was approved by the board of education in their regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 21.
The new laptop computers will be issued to students in grades 5-9, and also to incoming students from Twin Rivers and St. Mary’s schools.
Technology director Tony Richardson provided bids from three different companies and the board selected Connections to purchase 275 at $182.11 each for a total of $50,080.25. The management license will cost $6,567. 275 carrying cases at $23 each will total $6,325.
School superintendent Greg Darling explained the computers are part of a three-year rotation that includes elementary, middle school and high school.

98 graduates received diplomas in Humboldt

Brook Hjelmeland and Lizzie Tecklenburg were named Valedictorians of the Humboldt High School graduating Class of 2018 at commencement ceremonies held Sunday afternoon, May 20, in the high school gymnasium. Salutatorian honors went to Meg Grice and Tabitha Jergens. Gabriella Kent and Trevor Satern were awarded the Marvyl Friesth Award and their names will be added to the plaque in the Humboldt High School cafeteria.
Silver Cord Award recognition: Zach Collins, Robert Monson, Morgan Nehring and Amber Wittrock.
This year’s graduating class has 98 members and 17 are in National Honor Society. Twenty-one students earned a 3.0-3.499 Grade Point Average during their four years at Humboldt High School.

Humboldt Softball team in 11-1 victory at Manson

The No. 5 ranked Humboldt softball team improved to 3-0 on the young season by clubbing Manson-NW, 11-1 in Manson Thursday night. Humboldt clubbed 22 hits in the game with Kendal Clark, Carlie Thompson and Mady Lange each had four hits to power Humboldt. Ellie Jacobson earned the win pitching with 11 strikeouts.

Humboldt opened North Central Conference play Wednesday night by shutting out Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 10-0. The Wildcats scored their 10th run with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game early.

The Wildcats clubbed 11 hits on the night with Carlie Thompson leading the way by going 3-for-4 at bat with two RBI and two runs scored. Jori Hajek socked a 2-run home run and Ashlyn Clark and Kendal Clark each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Humboldt will visit Webster City on Friday, May 25, in another key conference game.

Girls set season record for wins with soccer victory

Humboldt's girls' soccer team set a school record for wins in a season by edging Storm Lake, 2-1 on May 22 in Humboldt. The victory in the regular season finale improved the Wildcats to 7-4 overall, the most wins in a season since the program began in 2013.

Cassie Peyton and Jaydn Smith both scored a goal for the Wildcats, who will host Iowa Falls-Alden on May 29 in a first round regional tournament game.
