The LuVerne Fire Department received a $5,000 boost in their fundraising efforts to build a new fire station.
Gary Moritz, Director of Communications at NEW Cooperative, presented the $5,000 check to the fire department last Thursday night.
The current fire station that houses their fire trucks and gear is in a dilapidated state. Matt Lawson, secretary-treasurer of the LuVerne Fire Department, said they are raising funds to build a new structure with basic amenities.
“The new fire station will provide a safe and reliable structure to store our emergency response vehicles and equipment. It will also provide an environment that is more user friendly to perform vehicle maintenance and fire training classes,” Lawson said.

Local author Carolyn Logan is pictured with her new book, Humboldt History in the News. She will be doing a book signing at the Humboldt Public Library on Monday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. The book will be available for $10 at the book signing, or is also available at Humboldt Newspapers, the Humboldt County Historical Museum or from Logan (see article for ordering information).

Local writer Carolyn Saul Logan will have a book signing and talk at the Humboldt Public Library on Monday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m., for her new book, Humboldt History in the News, a collection of Iowa historical articles.
The 140-page paperback book features 71 stories Logan wrote for Humboldt Newspapers and the Humboldt NOW magazine. It is available for $10.
“Several people suggested it would be nice to have the articles in book form. I picked out the ones I liked the best. There are several about the Humboldt County Historical Museum, and many about the history of Humboldt including some of my recollections growing up here,” Logan said.
The front cover of the book is a postcard photo taken by her grandfather, Peter Frank Saul, who established Saul Studio in Humboldt in 1883. The photo depicts a youth fishing from what is termed the north cliff of the Des Moines River, Hum-boldt.

Woeste excited to be at Northwestern

KENT WOESTE

When fall training camp arrives for the Northwestern College football team, Humboldt’s Kent Woeste is excited to be a part of it.
Woeste, a 2017 Humboldt High School graduate who will be a sophomore at NWC in Orange City, looks back on the growth he made after he completed his first year on the Red Raider football team.
Woeste is a 6-foot-4, 285-pound reserve offensive lineman. Northwestern finished the 2017 season with a 10-2 overall record, 7-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
NWC qualified for the NAIA playoffs and whipped No. 7 Langston, 55-7 in the first round of the playoffs. NWC was eliminated in the next round on Nov. 25 when they fell to No. 7 St. Francis, 30-3, in a game played in Fort Wayne, IN.
NWC was ranked No. 10 in the final Coaches Poll. They finished second in the conference behind No. 3 ranked Morningside (8-0).

Zylstra focused on one more season

AUSTIN ZYLSTRA

Former Humboldt High baseball standout Austin Zylstra has a new appreciation for any athlete who has had to overcome a major injury.
Zylstra, who will be a fifth-year senior at Northwestern College in Orange City in the fall, has spent the majority of the 2018 season recovering from shoulder surgery back on March 6.
Instead of playing a key role for the Red Raiders, who qualified for the NAIA National Tournament, Zylstra was forced to spend time on the sidelines as a cheerleader.
The Red Raiders compiled a 30-20 won-loss record and won the Great Plains Athletic Conference title to earn a trip to nationals, where they were eliminated after going 0-2. NWC suffered narrow losses to Taylor University (2-1) and to Cumberland University (8-7).
Not being able to be a part of the dog pile celebration on the field when the team edged Midland 2-1 in the conference final to earn a trip to nationals was a difficult pill to swallow.
