Quinton Orr 2nd, Humboldt boys 9th overall in 3A state cross country

Humboldt High sophomore distance sensation Quinton Orr finished second overall to lead the Humboldt High boys' cross country team to a ninth-place finish in the team scoring of the Class 3A State Cross Country Championships held on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Lakeside Golf Course north of Fort Dodge.

Orr finished in 16:10, seven seconds behind first-place Cody Mertens of Mount Pleasant. Humboldt senior Joe Kunert was 29th in 17:11 while Eric Wittrock was 75th in 17:44. Devon Coon clocked 18:07 to finish 102nd and Noah Helmer was 106th in 18:10. Nolan Jergens ran 114th, in 18:25 and Calvin Carlson was 126th in 19:22.

Humboldt High junior distance running standout Bryce Gidel secured another top 10 finish in the state cross country meet by placing ninth overall in the Class 3A Girls' state championships held at Lakeside Golf Course north of Fort Dodge on Saturday, Oct. 27.

Gidel finished the course in 19:21.1. Janette Schraft of Glenwood was the winner in 18:22.5.

Four named to All-State in music


Four Humboldt High School music students have attained the highest individual honor availa-ble to Iowa high school musi-cians by being selected as mem-bers of the 2018 All-State Or-chestra and Chorus. Hope Hjelmeland has been selected as a member of the All-State Orchestra. Hope (coronet) is the daughter of Ron and Jodi Hjelmeland, and is the student of Drew Barker and Kathy Yoakam. Holly Kirchhoff (so-prano), Sydney Burns (alto), and Carter Holm (bass) have been selected as members of the All-State Chorus. Holly is the daughter of Jeff and Ramona Kirchhoff. Sydney is the daugh-ter of Bruce and Teresa Burns. Carter is the son of Culley and Traci Holm. The trio is students of Michael Blair. Sydney also studies with Joan Enockson. Humboldt girls top Roland-Story in regional semifinal, 3-1

The Humboldt High girls volleyball team kept their post-season alive Tuesday (Oct. 23) night by turning back Roland-Story in four sets inside the Humboldt gym. The Wildcats won by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-15 to improve to 30-4 overall. Roland-Story bows out at 30-8.

The victory sent the Wildcats into a Class 3A Region 3 championship match against Osage on Monday, Oct. 29 in Clear Lake. Osage (28-6) downed Forest City in a semifinal match in Osage by scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-16.

Wildcats wallop Perry in season finale, 45-0

Humboldt ended its 2018 football season in dominating fashion Friday night (Oct. 19) by shutting out the Perry Blue Jays, 45-0 on Mason Maach Field in a Class 3A District 2 contest.

The victory gave Humboldt an overall record of 4-5, 3-2 in district play. Perry fell to 0-9, 0-5.

Lucas Volf scored two touchdowns to lead Humboldt. He had a scoring run of eight yards and intercepted a pass and returned 29 yards for a score in the second half. He also booted a 28-yard field goal. Jamison Heinz scored on a 14-yard run and Sawyer Savery added a four-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Joey Busse also hooked up with Matt Miller for a 20-yard touchdown pass play.

Scholten to visit Dakota City

U.S. Congressional Candidate J.D. Scholten continues his barnstorming tour of the 4th District in Humboldt County on Monday, Oct. 22 from 12-1 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 412 Main St., Dakota City.
Scholten welcomes everyone, regardless of party affiliation (or lack thereof) to attend, ask questions, and join in conversation about the issues impacting Iowans.
This is the Sioux City Democrat’s third stop in Humboldt County. He is looking forward to the opportunity to hearing from county residents.
Scholten will also be in Fort Dodge on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Iowa Central Community College Biohealth Science Auditorium for a town hall focused on Social Security and senior issues. Appearing with Scholten will be Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. The event is free and the program will begin at 11:30 a.m.
