Kevin Dresser named Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year


Humboldt's Kevin Dresser, shown here at a press conference two years ago when he was named head wrestling coach at Iowa State University, has been named Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year in his second year leading the Cyclone program.

Humboldt native Kevin Dresser, who is completing his second year as head wrestling coach at Iowa State University, has been named Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year.

The No. 15 ranked Iowa State wrestling team placed second in the Big 12 Conference tournament last weekend in Tulsa.
The Cyclones totaled 114.5 points to finish behind first-place Oklahoma State (158). The Cyclones had one individual champion and advanced nine of their 10 wrestlers into the NCAA championships Mar. 21-23 in Pittsburgh, PA.

Heinz, Carlson named All-North Central Conference

Jamison Heinz and Calvin Carlson, who led Humboldt in scoring this past season, were both selected All-North Central Conference by the league’s basketball coaches.
Heinz was named to the second-team while Carlson was a third-team pick. Their selections were announced last week after league champion Clear Lake was defeated in the Class 3A state semifinals.
Carlson, a senior guard, scored 268 points to average 13.4 points per game. Heinz, a junior guard, totaled 246 points to average 12.3 points per game.

Bill Smith inducted into MVC Hall of Fame

The late Bill Smith, an Olympic wrestling legend and long-time area resident who passed away in March of 2018, was inducted into the Missouri Valley Conference Athletic Hall of Fame last week.
Smith, who attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated from the school in the early 1950’s, was inducted in a ceremony in St. Louis last Friday, Mar. 8. Smith is Northern Iowa’s first inductee since Chris Buckham (track and field) was inducted in 2014.
Smith is UNI’s fifth inductee into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame since its inception in 1997. In addition to Buckham, other inductees from UNI include Molly O’Brien (volleyball) in 2013, Joey Woody (track and field) in 2012 and Iradge Ahrabi-Fard (volleyball) in 2011.

Ersland, Purdue prepare for Big Ten tournament, NCAA push

The 2018-19 season has been another year of progress for the Purdue University wrestling team under head coach Tony Ersland, who is wrapping up his fifth season at the helm.

Ersland, a 1992 Humboldt High School graduate and two-time state champion and former University of Iowa All-American, says there’s plenty left on the goals chart for his squad to accomplish in the next three weeks.

Courney completes indoor track season

Former Humboldt distance running standout Ryan Courtney, a sophomore at Simpson College and a member of the men’s track and cross country teams, recently completed his second indoor season running for the Storm.

Courtney, a 2017 Humboldt High School graduate, says he is pleased with the progress he has made over the winter and is looking forward to the spring season.

3 ADVANCE TO STATE MEET

A group of 13 area athletes placed high in the recent Special Olympics Regional Basketball competition held in Fort Dodge on Feb. 14.
Placing first in their respective divisions were Brent Oberhelman, Tyler Newberry, Adam Duffy and Cami Pederson. Oberhelman, Newberry and Duffy will advance to state competition in Iowa City on Mar. 16.

Humboldt’s Lange named 3rd team All-NCC

Humboldt High School junior basketball standout Mady Lange was recently selected third-team all-North Central Conference.

Lange led the Wildcats in scoring at 9.4 points per game. She was also second on the team in rebounding at 7.6 per game.

The NCC coaches’ post-season honors had five players listed as unanimous selections on the first-team unit. Unanimous picks include Iowa Falls-Alden senior Grace Renaud, Algona junior Aliyah Buscher, Clear Lake junior Sara Faber, Algona junior Abbey Holmes and Webster City junior Taylor McKinney. Iowa Falls-Alden senior Katie Meyer was also chosen to the first-team.

Second-team selections include Iowa Falls-Alden senior Madalyn Juhl, Algona junior Kameryn Etherington, Clear Lake junior Julia Merfeld, Iowa Falls-Alden sophomore Darby Dodd, Clear Lake sophomore Zoe Fasbender and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows sophomore Raven Kinnetz.

Elegance on Main theme for 2019 Gala

St. Mary’s annual Gala fundraising event will be held March 30, at Rustix Event Center in downtown Humboldt. This year’s Gala chairs are Doug and Darcy Berte and Dave and Jaclyn Olson.
Gala 2019 will be the 16th an-nual fundraising event for St. Mary School. This annual event tradi-tionally nets more than $100,000 that is used directly for school support. This is an important fundraising event for St. Mary School because of the funds raised and the enthusiasm generated for the pre-school through grade 6 students who attend St. Mary’s.
The evening will feature a Hors d'oeuvres, a full meal and complimentary beverages. New this year will feature online bidding for silent auction items. The evening will conclude with a disc jockey and music.

China Painters are 'Tickled Pink'

The Humboldt China Painters will hold their Spring Egg Show “Tickled Pink” from 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, at the Faith United Methodist Church, 107 4th St. North in Humboldt. Each painter will display their own painted porcelain at the show.
New this year will be a special program featuring the Teapot Choir from the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Callender, performing at 10 a.m. They make music from unique and distinctly painted teapots.
The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Coffee and bars will be provided. China painted porcelain eggs and other hand-painted items will be for sale. There will also be a silent auction. Proceeds from the show are used for continuing education.
