Wildcats fall to top-ranked Waterloo Columbus, 4-1

The Humboldt boys soccer team fell short in their bid for the school's first state tournament berth by falling to No. 1 ranked Waterloo Columbus Catholic, 4-1 on Saturday (May 25) in Waterloo.

Columbus moved into next week's state tournament at 19-2 while Humboldt ends its season at 9-10 overall. The nine victories ties the school record for most wins in a season.

WILDCATS BLANK LIONS 2-0, MOVE INTO SUBSTATE FINAL
The Humboldt boys soccer team moved into a substate final Wednesday night (May 22) by shutting out the Clear Lake Lions, 2-0, in semifinal round action in Humboldt.

The Wildcats got 2 goals from Alex Gonzalez to improve to 9-9.

Humboldt girls advance to state golf!

The Humboldt girls' golf team advanced into the state tournament by posting an impressive first-place finish in the Class 3A Regional Tournament in Storm Lake on Monday, May 20.

The Wildcats finished with 352 strokes to outdistance runner-up Atlantic, which had 390. Both schools move on to the state tournament, to be held May 28-30 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.

Frances Carlson was meet medalist in leading Humboldt with an 82. Nora Carlson was next with an 88 while Kenzie Mccarran shot a 94. Kelly Boleyn fired an 88.

Wildcat boys win substate soccer opener, 4-3

The Humboldt boys' soccer team opened substate tournament play Monday night in Waverly and kept their season alive by beating North Fayette Valley, 4-3.

The Wildcats got two goals from Lucas Volf and one each from Alex Gonzalez and Isaiah Kahl to move to 8-9 on the season.

Humboldt will host Clear Lake in a semifinal round match on Wednesday, May 22, starting at 5 p.m. The winner will advance into a substate final in Waterloo on May 25 against Waterloo Columbus or Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Kunert 4th in state 1,600 meters

Humboldt High senior distance runner Joe Kunert went out in style competing in his final race in the state track meet in Des Moines on Saturday, May 18.

Kunert finished fourth overall in the 1,600-meters with a time of 4:28.83. Teammate Quinton Orr was eighth in 4:32.64. Algona's Trey Engen was the winner in 4:24.83.

Humboldt's Jamison Heinz assured himself of his third state medal by placing eighth in the 200-meter dash in 23.02 seconds. It is the third state medal this week for Heinz, who was second in the long jump and also ran the third leg of the eighth-place sprint medley relay, which ran earlier on Saturday. The relay also consisted of Tyler Vitzthum, Cale Hundertmark and Matt Miller. Their time was 1:35.28, a new school record.

The Wildcats placed 8th overall in the 3A team scoring.

Distance medley relay 17th on day 2 of girls' state track

Humboldt's distance medley relay finished 17th overall in 4:26.15 on the second day of the Class 3A Girls State Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

The relay consisted of Mady Lange, Claire Varangkounh, Kirstyn Beaman and Bryce Gidel.

Humboldt's other entry on Friday and its final event of the meet had Lily Groat in the 400-meter hurdles. Groat finished 19th overall in 1:10.60.
