It’s not often you get a chance to brag to the governor of the state of Iowa. Aug. 6 was one of those times.
Humboldt city officials, members of the Ken and Marilyn Nielsen family and members of the business community joined Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg, on a tour of the 70,000 square foot Humboldt Recreation Center with the Ken and Marilyn Nielsen Family Fieldhouse.
The heads of state were interested in examples of private and public partnerships working to get important things done in a community and showing how Iowans work together.
From the beginning of Ken Nielsen’s idea scratched out on a piece of paper to today’s successful operations under the auspices of the city of Humboldt Recreation Department, the project has been a continual melding of private ideas and capital for the public good, with the city agreeing to take over and operate the Rec Center for the benefit of the community.

Animal Shelter group seeks funds from HCDA

The Humboldt Community Animal Shelter Board met last week to discuss a proposed shelter in the Northwest Industrial Park and ways to financial the new building in lieu of donated funds. The non-profit organization has a little over $21,000 in funds raised. A new animal shelter for the city/county is expected to cost around $235,000.

By KENT THOMPSON
Fresh on the heels of financial commitments amounting to at least $15,000 per year in designated contributions from Humboldt County and the city of Humboldt last week, the Humboldt Community Animal Shelter (HCAS) Board met Aug. 6 and took proactive measures to secure loan financing for the construction of a building. The building cost is expected to be around $235,000, it was reported.
HCAS Board member Travis Goedken told the group that the most economical alternative may be to look at a Humboldt County Development Association (HCDA) revolving loan fund agreement for $235,000 at an interest rate of 2 percent per year.
The cost would be $1,189 per month. However, there would be a balloon payment at the end of 10 years, at which time $129,201 would still be owed.

Wickett bounces back from injury at Buena Vista

Mason Wickett

An injury last year has only strengthened the resolve of Humboldt’s Mason Wickett, as he begins his third season on the Buena Vista University football team.
Wickett, who played in all 10 games for the Beavers back in 2017 as a freshman, appeared in eight games last year in the defensive line and is looking to play a key role in 2019.
“Last year, individually, I felt pretty successful. I felt like I was making good contributions to the team up until I got hurt in the middle of the season, so I had to sit out a few games,” Wickett said. “That was the first time I had ever had to sit out for being hurt.”

Dominick wins council seat

In a special election held Tuesday for the Ward 1 seat on the Humboldt City Council, Matt Dominick received 111 votes to 44 write-in votes for Steve Boomgarden.
Boomgarden submitted paperwork to force the special election, but then did not turn in his own nomination papers in time to be on the ballot.
Dominick will serve just over two months before the general election in November, when the seat will be voted on again by Ward 1 voters in the city of Humboldt.
