BREAKING NEWS: Livermore man found guilty of murder

Jeffrey Lynn Winters, a resident of Livermore at the time of the death of a LuVerne man 14 months ago, has been found guilty after a jury trial in Algona. Winters was convicted Wednesday in the murder of Randy M. Page, 54, of LuVerne, on Aug. 27, 2018. Winters pleaded guilty to a July 2018 stabbing assault in Humboldt County earlier this month.

A Kossuth County District Court jury has found a Livermore man guilty of first degree murder in a 2018 shooting in the town of LuVerne.
Jeffrey Lynn Winters, 61, of Livermore, was found guilty Wednesday afternoon by a 12-member jury after a nearly six-hour deliberation.
The verdict came after a week-long trial in Kossuth County District Court in Algona. The state and defense completed their cases on Tuesday. The defense did not present a witness on Winters’ behalf.
Winters was arrested on Aug. 28 in Mason City and charged in the shooting death of Randy Merle Page, 54, of LuVerne.
Page was found lying on the garage floor of his home at 202 Hanna Ave. in LuVerne late in the afternoon of Aug. 27, 2018.

The 2019 city and school elections are next Tuesday, Nov. 5. Polls are open at locations in the county from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Humboldt Independent wanted to get the ideas of candidates running for offices in city government.
In an effort to do so, a questionnaire was sent out to the candidates running for Humboldt Mayor and Humboldt City Council in Wards 1, 2 and 3.
Here is a sampling of thoughts:
Mayor Dan Scholl on incentives for local businesses: "With the significant structural investment the city is making in the downtown, I think it’s important to offer support of our existing businesses and to continue to be proactive in our approach of trying to attract new. While the council can take credit for listening and taking action, some of these ideas were actually generated from conversations with local business owners during the discussion of the revitalization process."

Members of the Humboldt Community Animal Shelter Board of Directors gathered with lead donor Mary Moffitt last Thursday evening at the site of the Moffitt Animal Shelter on 19th Street North, south of Union Cemetery. The Board was overwhelmed by a $250,000 donation announced last week by Moffitt, a California resident who grew up in the Humboldt/Dakota City area. The amount will be enough for the construction of the shelter, which is expected to cost $244,000. Local developer Jim Gronbach will be constructing the building and hopes to have footings poured before the end of the year and to have the building completed by April.
