Supervisors asked for support in river planning

For years there has been debate about what to do with the Reasoner Dam in Humboldt and how to improve the west fork of the Des Moines River through town. It appears that issue is once again on the front burner. According to Humboldt County Conservation Director Todd Lee, the Humboldt County Conservation Board is interested in looking into the matter. By KENT THOMPSON
The Des Moines River in Humboldt County is a great resource and a thing of beauty, but the condition of the streambed and the ability of the low head dam to regulate water flows are an issue.
On Monday, Humboldt County Conservation Director Todd Lee met with the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors to discuss the matter.
Lee said the Humboldt County Conservation Board is interested in moving ahead with a plan of action for the Reasoner Dam, but Lee wanted to speak to the Board of Supervisors first, before any preliminary action is taken.
“That’s why I’m here today is wanting to start an informal discussion. Any action on the dam or the river would have to have the support of the Board of Supervisors, and determine if this is a priority for you,” Lee said.

Sande leaves legacy of music for local groups

Humboldt Music Boosters President Ramona Kirchhoff (left) was trying hard not to let emotions get the best of her last Friday afternoon, but who could blame her. She had just received word of a $50,000 donation to the Humboldt Music Boosters from the family of the late Jerry Sande. Pictured donating the check are Jerry Sande’s brother and sister, Ron Sande (center) and Linda Arends (right). Humboldt Independent photo.

Jerry Sande had a lifelong love of music.
That love is continuing in the form of generous donations in his memory after his passing.
Jerry Sande passed away Aug. 15, 2018, at the age of 66.
As part of his last will and testament, Jerry Sande remembered his association with the various musical groups that were so important to his life.
He has donated his bassoon to Iowa State University, and provided monetary donations of $15,000 to the Cherokee Symphony, $50,000 to the Humboldt Music Boosters and $100,000 to the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, of which he had been a member for 48 years. Humboldt Mutual makes long-range plans for policyholders

The trend continues that storms are hitting more frequently and more severe, which means when they do hit Humboldt County the storms cause more damage.
In 2017-18, more than one-half of Humboldt Mutual’s policyholders had claims. That included the March 6 hailstorm in Humboldt which led to approximately 550 claims. Plus there was another storm May 15-16, and one in Klemme on July 10. Last year, Bode got hit with a hailstorm on May 1 and West Bend on Aug. 28. Altogether in 2017-18, Humboldt Mutual paid out more than $12.5 million for approximately 1,400 claims.
“These were catastrophic events,” Bob Abens, Secretary-Manager of Humboldt Mutual Insurance Association, said. “The trend continues that storms are more frequent and more severe so when they do hit they cause more damage.”
Long range planning by Humboldt Mutual led to efforts to work with customers on ways to mitigate losses.
