A constant of Kiwanis Christmasland during the past three-plus decades has been its long narrow-gauge train tracks and its model trains.
“Kids love the trains,” Humboldt/Dakota City Noon Kiwanis President Dave Lee said.
The term “kids” is used loosely here, as they could be age 60, 70 or older.
“A model train is something that not only fascinates the little ones, but takes some of us adults back to our youth and getting a train set on Christmas morning,” Lee said.
The train has been part of the Kiwanis Christmasland display for more than 25 years, Lee reports.
Kiwanis Christmasland will be open this Friday, Nov. 29 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. The attraction will be closed Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 2-4, and reopen on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Four-and-one-half years after conception planning began and 19 months after the first shovels of dirt were turned, on Sunday, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) celebrated a well deserved victory.
The hospital hosted an open house and community tours of the new 40,000 square foot, two-story addition, which incorporates the UnityPoint Family Medicine – Humboldt Clinic, as well as many other hospital services and specialties.
People also got a glimpse of repurposed space in the front portion of the old hospital entrance, which includes a new home for the laboratory and additional space for Genevieve’s and the patient registration area.
It was announced earlier this fall that the Humboldt County Hospital Foundation would be leaving a $1 million gift to the 2019 HCMH building project, to be paid in $100,000 installments over a 10-year period.

Humboldt High School senior Ellie Jacobson is ready to focus on her final year after she signed a letter of intent last week to attend Des Moines Area Community College next fall and play softball.
Jacobson, daughter and Joe and Trish Jacobson of Humboldt, has been an all-conference and all-state performer for Humboldt in each of the last four seasons coming out of eighth grade. With over 100 career victories, she is looking to finish her final campaign with a flourish.

Coach Jason Thurm takes over Wildcat program

Entering his first season as head coach of the Humboldt boys’ basketball team, Jason Thurm couldn’t be more pleased with the nucleus he has to build a team around.
Thurm greeted strong numbers and six returning lettermen when Humboldt began pre-season practice back on Nov. 18. They’ll be looking to improve on last year’s record of 8-12 overall, 6-8 and fifth in the North Central Conference.

HHS returns 16 lettermen

Things are looking pretty good for the Humboldt wrestling program.
Wildcat head coach Chad Beaman begins his 17th season overall leading the Wildcats. He has compiled a 386-193-3 won-loss record overall with his other coaching stops.
Last year Beaman guided the Wildcats to a 27-5 overall dual mark, including 6-1 and co-champions of the North Central Conference. Thanks to the return of 16 lettermen, hopes are high in the practice room again.
“It has been exciting when you look at our program overall from a community standpoint. We have over 120 kids in our wrestling club in pre-k through sixth grade. We have over 50 wrestlers on our middle school team, which we have never had before,” Beaman said. “I’ve got 34 boys and up to 15 girls on our high school teams.”
“It is very exciting. A lot of people talk about wrestling and that’s what we want to be doing,” Beaman said.

Female wrestling is taking off across the United States and it is now a reality at Humboldt High School.
This year Humboldt is joining a large number of schools across the state to field a girls’ club team. Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman and his staff ended the first week of pre-season practice with 15 athletes.
“If you had asked me five years ago if this would become a reality today, I don’t know that I could have said yes,” Beaman said. “Wrestling for young women has really started moving forward.”

Wildcats return 6 letterwinners

In veteran Humboldt girls’ basketball coach Rodd Mooney’s eyes, there’s nothing like pre-season basketball to get focused on the task at hand.
Coming off a 4-17 record from last year, including a 1-13 mark in the powerful North Central Conference, it’s safe to say Mooney and his Wildcats have a tall task in front of them this winter, but they aren’t backing down.
Thanks to the return of six letterwinners who have gained extensive action as underclassmen, the Wildcats are poised to make a breakthrough this season.

Humboldt finished 30-6 overall

Led by first-team selections Jori Hajek and Deni McDaniel, the Humboldt volleyball team had six players named to the post-season North Central All-Conference team.
Their selections were announced at the team banquet on Nov. 18 at the high school.
Second-team selections for Humboldt include senior libero back row specialist Carlie Thompson and junior middle hitter Emily Zaugg. Third-team selections include senior middle hitter Mady lange and senior outside hitter Claire Varangkounh.
They helped the Wildcats finish 6-1 and runner-up in the NCC standings, 30-6 overall. Their only loss in the league was to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, which qualified for the Class 2A state tournament for the second straight year and advanced to the semifinals.
Humboldt reached the final round of regional tournament play for the fifth straight year and lost to eventual 3A state semifinalist Carroll Kuemper.
