BREAKING NEWS: Friday the 13th fatality in Humboldt County

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office investigated a fatal traffic accident late Friday morning, south of Gilmore City on County Road C-49.

A rollover accident Friday morning has claimed the life of a Storm Lake man, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the report, on Friday, Dec. 13 at 11:15 a.m., the Humboldt County Communication Center received a report of a single vehicle rollover accident in the 1100 mile of 270th Street (County Road C-49), 5.5 miles south of Gilmore City.
Deputies responded to the scene and determined that a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup owned and operated by Leonard Peterson, 82, of Storm Lake, was traveling eastbound on 270th Street when the pickup drifted to the north shoulder of the road and then swerved back to the south, where it overcorrected and Peterson lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle entered the south ditch and rolled several times before coming to rest on its wheels.
After coming to rest, Peterson drove the vehicle through fields toward a nearby field driveway before getting stuck.

Public input wanted at Dec. 18 meeting

The information under the caption of this photo on the front page of this week's Humboldt Independent is incorrect. The little girl taking part in the Shop with and Elf event last Saturday in downtown Humboldt is in fact Caitlin Vinsand, not Collin Smith, as stated. The Humboldt Independent apologizes for the factual error and will reprint the photo with the correct information in the Dec. 19 Independent. Humboldt Independent photo.

Change happening to Humboldt’s downtown and some of its longstanding institutions may have some citizens worried.
Rather than worry about what may or may not come about, why not provide a positive outlook on things you would like to see the city continue, change or add new.
That’s the focus of a community betterment meeting planned for Wednesday, Dec. 18 at the Humboldt Community Center (Senior Citizens Building) at 607 1st Avenue South. Hours of the meeting are 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
According to Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken and Humboldt County Economic Development Director Alissa O’Connor, the meeting will be a come and go, open house format. There will be brief presentations at 4 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m.

Dean Coleman passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 13 from injuries suffered in a fall from inside a grain bin at his farm.
Kelly Nostrom, Michele Wright, Brad Duffy and Kent Mueller, all with Humboldt County Farm Bureau Financial Services, presented Carol with more than 350 reading books in memory of Dean. Many of the books were farm related or books that spark the imagination or about inventing. Inside the cover of each of the books is a photo of Dean Coleman along with a note saying the book was donated in memory of Dean.
Those books were then donated to Taft Elementary School.
The presentation was made at the same time that third graders from Taft Elementary came to the Coleman farm to harvest corn they planted last spring as second graders.
