Wildcat boys win, girls fall at Clarion

Humboldt's varsity boys' basketball team claimed another North Central Conference victory Friday night (Jan. 31) by beating Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 72-60 in Clarion. Humboldt improved to 10-5 overall on the season, 6-4 in conference play. Sam Fischer scored 21 points, Jamison Heinz 19 and Jacob Thurm 11 to lead Humboldt.

The Humboldt girls fell short in their contest with the Cowgirls, falling 45-35. Humboldt moved to 9-9 overall, 4-7 in the NCC. Kendal Clark scored 10 points to pace the Wildcat scoring. Jori Hajek made nine and Mady Lange eight.

The Wildcats return to action at home on Tuesday, Feb. 4, against Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Humboldt visits Clear Lake on Friday, Feb. 7.

Wildcat wrestling team pins Cougars, 56-16

The No. 9 ranked Humboldt wrestling team closed out their regular season in impressive fashion Thursday night (Jan. 30) by crushing Manson-Northwest Webster, 56-16 inside the Humboldt gym on Senior Night. The non-conference victory put Humboldt's dual record at 18-1 overall. The Cougars fell to 16-3 overall.

Humboldt got victories from Logan Nilles at 195 pounds (7-4), Colten Goodell at 220 (4:49), Walt DeLanoit at 285 (2:34), Cole Nelson at 106 (0:24), Jase Goodell at 113 (forfeit), Cresten Craven at 120 (4-0), Ty Gargano at 132 (forfeit), Joe Weydert at 145 (forfeit), Fletcher Satern at 152 (forfeit), Levi Naeve at 160 (17-0 4:42) and Braxden Scott at 170 (3:09).

Humboldt's junior varsity will compete in a meet at Pocahontas on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Next action for the varsity will be the Class 2A Sectional Tournament in Humboldt on Saturday, Feb. 8, starting at 12 noon.

Political caucuses are Monday in Humboldt


The GOP caucus will be the VFW Hall in Dakota City. The Democrat caucus will be at Taft Elementary School. People should arrive at either caucus prior to 7 p.m.

Humboldt County Republicans and Democrats will have a chance to caucus for their favorite candidates on Monday, Feb. 3, when Iowa hosts its first-in-the-nation caucuses.
The Republican Party in Humboldt County will be holding its 2020 Presidential Caucus on Monday, Feb. 3 at the VFW Hall, 412 Main St., Dakota City.
This will be the caucus site for all Republican voters from the precincts of Avery-North Weaver; Dakota City-Grove Township; Delana-Wacousta-North Rutland; Humboldt Precinct 1-Corinth-South Weaver; Humboldt Precinct 2-Beaver-South Northway; Humboldt Precinct 3-South Rutland; Humboldt Township and West Vernon Township; North Lake and East Vernon; and South Lake-North Norway will all caucus at the VFW Hall in Dakota City.
The caucus will convene promptly at 7 p.m., so people are encouraged to arrive early to get checked in and seated on time.

County unveils new and improved website

There are many more interactive features to the improved site, including the ability to interact with county officials regarding issues. What’s new for 2020, how about the Humboldt County website?
After more than a year in the making, the county unveiled its new website this past week. Operating under the same URL, www.humboldtcountyia.org, the new site is much more interactive and “user friendly” as the saying goes, with more drop-down menus of information and easy access to county budgets, board of supervisor minutes, permits and ability to pay vehicle licenses and tax bills online.

Dance Team Night Showcase Saturday


Humboldt dance squads including pre-K through eighth grade students will participate in dance team night at the Humboldt High School, Saturday, Feb. 1.

The Humboldt High School Dance Team Night Showcase will take place this Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Humboldt High School gym. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Children age three and under are free.
Prior to the performances, there will be a free will donation meal in the cafeteria from 5-6:30 p.m.
Pre-K through eighth grade students will take part in a clinic in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon, and then will perform a routine at the evening showcase. The Humboldt High School Drill Team will perform their state routines, including solos along with some fun routines such as hip hop, hoopla, co-ed, father/daughter and lights.
At State Competition on Dec. 5-6, the team received Division I ratings for their pom, kick and jazz routines. They placed fifth in kick and third in pom. The team is coached by Nicole Fusco.

Humboldt boys roll past Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 79-48

The Humboldt boys' basketball team broke the .500 mark in North Central Conference play Tuesday night (Jan. 28) by running over Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 79-48 in a league contest inside the Humboldt gym. Jacob Thurm canned in 8 3-point baskets to finish with 24 points to lead Humboldt in scoring. Gabe Gidel was next with 10. Thurm tied the single-game school record for 3-point baskets for the second straight week.

Humboldt is 9-5 overall, 5-4 in the NCC.

The Wildcats will play at Clarion on Friday, Jan. 31, for another NCC matchup.
