Wildcat girls upset Bulldogs, 65-50

The Humboldt girls basketball team pulled off a big win on Tuesday night (Jan. 28) by beating No. 13 ranked (Class 3A) Hampton-Dumont-CAL, 65-50 in a North Central Conference game inside the Wildcat gym. Kendal Clark scored 20 points, Mady Lange made 15 and Jayda Hoefer netted 11 to lead Humboldt. Lauren Meader led the Bulldogs (13-2) with 24 points. Avery Hanson added 18.

Humboldt, 9-8 overall, 4-7 in the NCC. The Wildcats play at Clarion on Friday, Jan. 31.

Clark wins state title, Woeste 8th in girls state wrestling!

Humboldt's Kendal Clark won the 170-pound title while teammate Tia Woeste placed eighth in the Iowa High School Girls' State Wrestling Tournament held in Waverly Jan. 24-25.

Clark, 11-1 on the season, pinned Kenzie Fischels of Independence in 1:13 in the championship match to lead Humboldt's 12-girl contingent in the second annual state tournament sponsored by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.

Clark went 4-0 over the two-day tournament while Woeste went 2-3 at 195 pounds. Humboldt placed seventh in the team scoring with 91 points. Waverly-Shell Rock claimed the team title with 156.5 points, followed by Charles City with 128, Dubuque Wahlert with 121, Osage at 119, Iowa City West with 102 and Colfax-Mingo at 93. Crestwood was eighth with 77 points. Anamosa was ninth at 71 and Mid-Prairie Wellman was 10th with 64.

Nilles, Naeve, Craven win NCC wrestling titles as Humboldt places 3rd

Humboldt placed third in the team scoring and crowned three individual champions in the North Central Conference wrestling tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25 in Iowa Falls.

The Wildcats finished with 187.5 points to finish behind first-place Iowa Falls-Alden (198.5) and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (192.5). Hampton-Dumont-CAL was fourth with 175, followed by Algona (158), Webster City (111.5), Clear Lake (102) and Fort Dodge St. Edmond (14).

Humboldt's title winners on the day include a trio of seniors in Logan Nilles at 182 pounds, Levi Naeve at 160 and Cresten Craven at 120. Cole Nelson was a runner-up at 106 pounds, along with Colten Goodell at 220. Colby Clarken was their at 126. Securing fourth-place for Humboldt was Jordan Jensen at 138, Jase Goodell at 113 and Tanner McKimmey at 195. Josh Beldin was fifth at 285. Sixth-place went to Ty Gargano at 132, Joe Weydert at 145, Fletcher Satern at 152 and Braxden Scott at 170.

Humboldt 7th after opening day of girls state wrestling

Humboldt is in seventh place in the team scoring after day one of the Girls State Wrestling Tournament in Waverly.

The Wildcats, who have three quarterfinalists, have 56 team points. Waverly-Shell Rock is first with 96.5, followed by Wahlert Dubuque with 75, Charles City with 71, Osage at 66, Anamosa with 65 and Iowa City West with 60. Decorah is eighth at 52, followed by Crestwood with 41 and Colfax-Mingo with 38.

Humboldt's Kendal Clark and Maria Elizondo are alive in the 170-pound quarters on opposite sides of the bracket. Both girls wrestled once and won their bouts. Clark's was a seven-second pin. Deni McDaniel at 138 pounds is Humboldt's other quarterfinalist. McDaniel won all three of her matches on Friday night.

Mady Lange was 4-1 at 126 and Kirstyn Beaman was 4-1 at 126. Ashlyn Sutterfield (106), Abby Satern (113), Baylie Beers (126) and Kali Beaman (138) went 1-2. Bre Hotovec was 0-2 at 120 and Emily Zaugg 0-2 at 145. Tia Woeste was 0-1 at 195.

Humboldt boys win, girls fall at Algona

Humboldt's girl/boy varsity basketball teams split a doubleheader at Algona Friday night (Jan. 24) with the girls falling 51-40 in the opener and the boys winning 57-48.

Humboldt's girls are now 8-8 overall, 3-6 in the North Central Conference. The Wildcat boys are 8-5 overall, 4-4 in the NCC.

Next action is Jan. 28 at home against Hampton-Dumont-CAL.
